Review & Giveaway: Tropical Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent

One of the areas I am probably most un-environmentally friendly is the dishwasher. I have an older dishwasher that I am assuming is as old as the house, and I know it uses more energy and water than newer models. I also use the all in one packs from one of the big brands to clean with it, thanks to whatever sale or deal I've snagged recently. Because I know the combination is bad for the environment, I tend to just use the dishwasher to sterilize my canning jars and glass baking dishes, mixing bowls, and pet bowls several times a month. I'd like to use it a bit more - there are nights I am so tired, and I am sitting there with a counter full of dishes. It sure would be nice on those occasions to just toss it all in the dishwasher, and let it do the heavy work while I go count sheep! lol

Tropical Traditions can help alleviate some of my guilt with their Powdered Dishwasher Detergent that they sent me to review. It's ultra concentrated, made with enzymes, and it's free of chlorine, phosphates, fillers, and fragrances. It also has a naturally derived rinse agent and a hard water treatment additive. Plus, it's safe for septic systems, which is something I try to be careful about. (The last thing I want is an emergency trip for our septic system - yikes!)

As soon as the Powdered Dishwasher Detergent arrived, I filled the dishwasher with my glass dishes. I had done some baking, and I had a full load. I can't stand it when my glass mixing bowls aren't glistening - I trudge on after hand washing them, but in a complete grid down situation, I'd really miss sparkling glass, I admit it. :( I was really interested in seeing how they would come out. Now this wasn't a crusted on load, more of a getting to know you kind of load - this was my first time using powdered detergent in my dishwasher. It took maybe a few extra seconds than pulling out one of the old dishwasher packs, which really didn't bother me - and the container came with a measuring scoop, so I didn't have to dig around in my drawers for one to sacrifice.

Fast forward to the load being done, and I was pretty pleased with my crystal clear glassware! My dishwasher was cleaner too - sometimes with packs, I guess because my dishwasher is old and on it's last legs lol, I end up with leftovers from the plastic packs. There was no residue or gunk left on my dishwasher that I could see!

The next day, I tossed in a more dirty load with plates, utensils, and a tomato sauce crusted dish from lunch. The Tropical Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent worked just as well as any other product I have tried in my dishwasher - there were a few things here and there in the one dish, but I chalk that up to my dishwasher more than the products. All in all I am pretty pleased with it, and I'm happy that I can use my dishwasher and be a little bit more green in doing so. I'll definitely use it a bit more often. (If only my pots & pans were dishwasher safe!)

A five gallon container of Tropical Traditions Powdered Dishwasher Detergent retails for $32.00, but it's currently on sale for $19.99.

Win it! Thanks to Tropical Traditions, one lucky reader will win a container of the Powdered Dishwasher Detergent! To enter, head on over to Tropical Traditions website, and tell me another one of their products that you think would you in your quest to be more green.

I have to say, ignoring the whole environmental message, I like their food products because they are dairy free. I would love to try their organic chocolate. We are always looking for dairy-free chocolate.
