Abu Saheeh spent 13 years living in America, before returning back to Iraq. The country has changed quite a bit since the American military presence. Now that he lives alone in the city, he can get what he wants: freedom from his past. No one knows him, no one knows he spent time in America. He becomes a mobile phone salesman. Then he meets Layla, a whimsical fourteen-year-old street urchin who enchants him with her love of American pop culture. Abu begins to settle into his "new" life, enjoying Layla's company and her stories. All is not a perfect fairy tale though - Abu's alliance with a powerful merchant and his employment of a hot-headed young assistant reawaken painful memories from his past. Will Layla be able to save Abu before he endangers all around him?
I found this story to be a little different than what I usually read on my own. The book reeled me in though, and I enjoyed reading it. That being said, the book might not be for everyone - but if you give the book a chance, I think you'll enjoy reading it, too.
You might assume that this book, while fiction, was written by an Iraqi - but the author was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard, and was with his family in Oman from 2010 to 2011.
The end of the book features a discussion guide with a Q & A with the author, and some reading group questions.
One Hundred And One Nights by Benjamin Buchholz is a paperback fiction book publisher by Bay Back Books. It is 368 pages long. The suggested cover price is $13.99, but Amazon has it available for $11.07 as of this posting. It is also available as an e-book for the Kindle and other e-readers.
I received a copy of this book in order to read it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and not that of the author(s) or publisher.
