Dear Kirk,

I know what car you drive, down to the model and year.

I even know when your last oil change was and where you have it done.

I know that you have a fondness for online gaming. You like to purchase in-game items for those games, too.

I know your political choices, down to who you voted in the last election.

You'd think we were best friends, but our paths have never crossed.

You see Kirk doesn't bother to double check his email address when he gives it out, and always gives MINE. I'm guessing he uses something like an auto former filler, and never double checked that the address he entered was correct.

Let this be a lesson in privacy and online safety for all: when you're entering your information online, from making a purchase to signing up for an email list to entering a contest - be very sure that your information is correct. Not everyone is as nice as me and simply hits the delete button and unsubscribe - others can take that information and do very bad things. :(

But seriously, folks, this is scary. There's a woman in England who must have a similar email address to mine. I've been put on mass mailing lists because of it. Fortunately, she seems like a nice woman with nice friends who obligingly take me off their mass mailing lists - eventually - but it takes a while to get everyone to comply. Mostly I worry that she's not getting the info that was intended for her, and I don't know her address to forward it to her. Anyway, it is disturbing to think emails intended for me are going elsewhere, but I'm sure they are, especially since I have a very common name (other than Anonymous). Never was keen on putting my email address in comments for giveaways.

Anon: I agree. That is why I wanted to post this, so others might think to be a little more careful too!
