It's no secret that I love my chocolate, right? The Kroger family of stores - including our local Fred Meyer and QFC - have recently launched a store brand called "The Truly Awesome", making packaged goods like macaroni & cheese to lowfat yogurt cups. The Truly Awesome Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies is one of the first offerings from the line. They are free of added preservatives and artificial colors, and chocolate chips are the first ingredient as the front of the box says.

I admit I only purchase store made cookies here and there. No offense to the big names, but I've found I could make homemade cookies cheaper - and better. However, there are moments where I am a lazy housewife (I admit it!), and it's good to have a hidden box of shelf stable cookies in my pantry for those "I gotta have a chocolate-y snack now!" moments. (Not to mention it's not easy to bake cookies when the power is out during winter months, right? Chocolate chip cookies definitely are comfort food in a snowstorm!)
Opening up the box, I could see that yes, there was plenty of chocolate chips in the cookies, so that was great:
They are bigger than some packaged cookies too. Tastewise, I want to be honest: they tasted like basic bakery chocolate chip cookies you'll find over in that section to me. Nothing special, but not the worst packaged cookie I've ever had. They were crunchy, and I could definitely taste that chocolate thanks to all those chocolate chips!
The Truly Awesome Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies come in a package of eight cookies, and were on sale at my local Fred Meyer this past week for $2.50 a box. My first thought was that I could make double the batch for the same price myself, but I realize not everyone wants to be in the kitchen baking, either. Personally, I might purchase a box at the $1.50 price point, but not any higher.
And I know they might not like me pointing this out, but the front of the box says "Made with real butter". That it is - but margarine is also an ingredient listed higher on the ingredients list. I found that a little sneaky.
If you like store bought cookies, give The Truly Awesome Homestyle Chocolate Chip Cookies a try. But if you're like my family, and you prefer homebaked goodness, I'm not sure you'll find a place for these in your pantry. I'll definitely give the The Truly Awesome Low Fat yogurt cups a try next trip to Fred Meyer's though.
Just a note: if you are sending gift packages overseas to members of our military, these cookies are packaged in an inner rigid plastic sleeve in the box that makes the cookies stay in one piece a little better - it makes them perfect to include in the package!
I received two packages of these cookies as a member of BzzAgent in order to share my thoughts on this product. All opinions are definitely my own.
