I Married An Old Man...

So today is glimpse of how DH is going to look like when he's 91. LOL! He's sore and miserable, but it could be a lot worse - at least he didn't break anything. I still feel icky, but at least I'm down to a sore Rudolph nose and coughing - the nausea is gone. I'm so thankful that it seems I am the only one who has gotten sick!

I'm continuing in the vein of comfort food and making chili cheese fries and buffalo chicken sandwiches. ;) The only thing is - I'm all out of Diet Dr Pepper! EEK!

Oh, and I cleaned the window on the door, finally. I couldn't take it anymore!

DVD Review: PlayFul Planet Storyland Yoga

I started doing a little bit of yoga several years ago during our TTC journey. Someone suggested to me that it could perhaps help us finally get that BFP (that's big fat positive, as in positive pregnancy test, for those not used to TTC logo), as anyone who has tried to get pregnant for more than a year will attest - there's a point where you'll try just about ANYTHING. I'd never given yoga more than a passing thought before that, but I picked up a DVD at a thrift store, and kind of fell in love. I'm not a diehard or a yoga expert by any means, of course, but I enjoy it when I get a chance - which might be a little more often, thanks to PlayFul Planet.

Playful Planet was created by a Mom after her daughter Lily was born, and they met Ahmed Fahmy, a local kid's yoga instructor who used storytelling in his classes. The idea for the DVD series was born at this moment, when it was realized how hard it is to find kids' instructors for yoga. With the DVD's, no matter where you live, your child can begin yoga!

We received the Storyland Yoga DVD to review. Not only are they learning yoga postures by becoming part of the story and mimicking the animals in the story, but there's an eco-conscious "Save The Planet" underlying theme going on throughout the stories. This DVD actually contained two stories - a shorter "Save The Whale" and a longer story, "Condor Trek". The DVD is meant for ages 3 to 8, but that doesn't mean that younger or older won't benefit from it. My two and a half year old was all game for "exercising with Mami", and while she didn't exactly get all the poses right (it's not like I ever do, either LOL), we enjoyed it together. The shorter running time story was more suited for her, but as she grows, I'm sure her attention span will too. The stories were fun for her, and the more we watch it, the more she is picking up. The moves are simple, and he doesn't burden kids with the actual name all the time, but names kids can remember and identify with. I'm sure it's a lot different than taking an actual kids' yoga class, but it's fun. I look forward to more titles down the road from this company!

Playful Planet donates a portion of the proceeds of this DVD to "Save the Whales" and "Kids VS Global Warming" Foundations - two thumbs up for that! (And the DVD is packaged in 100% recycled materials!) If you are interested in picking up a copy for your kids to enjoy, you can purchase it via Amazon, where it is $14.99 as of this posting. (and eligible for free super saver shipping)

I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it.

Is February Over Yet?

Anytime your husband starts off a phone call with Babe, they called 911 for me, it's never a good thing - and it's just another part of this super trying week. Apparently, DH was talking to someone in the parking lot at work as his break was finishing up. As he was walking up, he slipped on the walkway, back first, and thumped his head.

He's home now, he seems alright, brain wise - but his back is probably going to be killing him by later tonight. He filled out paperwork at work, since it did happen there, but I am cringing at the costs that could be coming up if we have to pay for everything.

2011 isn't looking any better than 2010. Or 2009, for that matter. I took out some of my frustrations a little bit ago though making homemade bread crumbs. There's some serious satisfaction in doing it yourself. It always reminds me of why there were no overweight housewives at the beginning of last century. lol ;)

It's comfort foods on the menu here tonight - homemade fried chicken, homemade mac n cheese, and corn bread. Bring on the calories!

Baby It's Cold Out There!

Alright, not as cold as some of y'all have - but 17 is absolutely FREEZING to me, and that's what it was overnight here. lol It says it's 28 right now - brrrr!

...it drives me crazy that after three years of having wood heat as our main source of heat, DH still struggles with starting and keeping our fire going. lol Typical man, you tell him what he's doing wrong (overloading the wood), and he says he knows what he is doing.

Dear Lord, thank you for us not living in a third world country where if the fire goes out, we starve.

I torment the poor guy by telling him he is the worst Caveman ever. ;)

Don't worry, he gives it right back to me about how I am the worst window cleaner ever. The front door has had mold on the window for about two weeks now. It's been on my to-do list, but every time I go to clean it, I get distracted with something else.

At least I admit I have cleaning ADD!

We did get a lot done this earlier this week, mostly in the yard. The deck was completely cleared off so we can bribe someone who owns a powerwasher to borrow it and hopefully re-seal it before it starts to rot when it gets dry. (Otherwise we'll be stuck buying one and I probably don't want to see the prices, do I?) All of my planters are ready to go, and this weekend, DH is going to put together my small greenhouse (it's my review from CSN!) so I can get my plants started. I was going to do it, but then this snow kind of scared me.

...by the way, I finally found seeds at the Dollar Tree. 4 packets for $1 - but don't get too depressed if they don't take off. I bought some good tomato and pepper seeds at Freddy's already, and I'll start those first. Since those are the plants I need/want the most, I want to be sure those are started before I start messing around with the plants I will most likely kill before they even get put into a planter.

....see? I know my shortcomings. I have come a long way in the garden, but I know my black thumb is still there. Again, I'm thankful we don't live in a third world country where if my garden bombs, we starve to death.

.......Although, after watching the price of gas climb again this week, we might starve anyways. Holy smokes, did it jump 20 cents in a day by you, too? I told DH he should buy me that pink Hello kitty scooter I covet, and then he could use it to go to work, and we'll save money on gasoline.

He's not amused. ;)

Back In The Saddle Again...

Well, sort of. The Internet is back up and running, and thank the heavens it was a problem on Qwest's part, and not ours. It turns out some of their wires were exposed to the elements and with this cold snap, had just taken a beating and died.

Right now, it's snowing pretty good - YUCK! I hate snow! I also seemed to have picked up a bug or something over the last few days - yesterday before I went to bed I was starting to feel icky - I actually went to bed by 7! - and by early this morning, I was wishing whoever passed along their germs to me would die a slow, painful death. lol Luckily, I had stocked up our medicine cabinet and pulled out some Theraflu, so I guess I don't feel as bad as I could be feeling.

I have to say without the Internet at least we did get a lot done around here, and I'm looking forward to doing some more spring cleaning! I've got some posts to share with y'all later on, but right now I need some more rest.

22 February 2011

Technical Difficulties!

Happy Tuesday, y'all! I know there's a lot of dust on here right now, but I haven't abandoned my beloved blog - we couldn't get onto the Internet and thought just a line was down, so we headed out for the day (there have been Qwest trucks next door on and off for a couple of weeks) - and it still was down when we came home, so DH called. Turns out they think it's an outdoor wiring issue... and they won't be here to fix it until Wednesday AM. :( Thank the heavens for free WiFi and McDonald's play land! LOL I'll be back online as soon as I can - keep your fingers crossed their original thoughts is correct, and it's the outside wires - otherwise, we're on the hook for the bill if they have to fix inside, and that's a minimum $85 charge - cringe!

It's so weird not having the Internet at home, because there goes of course being on the computer... online gaming for us... and Netflix! I hadn't realized how dependent we've gotten on it! So anyways, today we're going to hit a few thrift stores since DH is home, and then we can waste some time away. Hopefully I can find something off my wish list!

Spay Day Is Almost Here!

The first step in the battle of pets finding good homes is to make sure that as many pets are spayed and neutered as possible! If you're not a professional breeder, please get your cat or dog "fixed" as soon as they are old enough to have it done.

There are so many pets here in Washington State absolutely desperate to have a home right now. Many will never leave the shelter - and that is absolutely heartbreaking. If you have a cat or dog that needs to be spayed or neutered, and you're short on funds, many organizations can help! Don't be afraid to get into contact with a local rescue group, or your local no-kill shelter. They can usually point you into the right direction.

This Tuesday, February 22nd is Spay Day here in Washington! Spay Day is open to anyone, regardless of income level, who wants to have their dog, cat, puppy or kitten spayed or neutered. If your pet is already altered, please encourage your friends and family to do the same for their animals! The cost is really minimal: $40 for male or female cats or kittens, and $80 for male or female dogs or puppies. (I paid nearly $200 for Sabbath, so trust me - this is a GREAT deal!)

For a complete listing of local clinics involved, you can visit PAWS website www.paws.org/spay-day.html. And if this is too last minute for you, contact PAWS - they offer a great reduced rate all year round. (and they also help with bunnies being spayed and neutered - trust me, it's hard to find vets around here who normally do it!)

Please be a responsible pet owner. Have your pet spayed or neutered!

Review & Giveaway: Calming Collars

Sometimes when you rescue a pet, you end up with behavioral problems that should have been addressed by the former owners, but for whatever reason, wasn't. And sometimes, the behavioral problems appear as a result of the trauma from being rescued. That's kind of what happened with Captain - he has separation anxiety. We just get the feeling that he's so afraid he'll end up back where he was before. (Not going to happen - ever!) Captain follows me everywhere - I don't even get a shower without him waiting outside the bathtub. For the most part, it doesn't bother me, but I feel bad for the little guy. :(

Now, we don't really get thunderstorms out here in this part of Washington - they are very rare here - but a few months back we had quite the doozy of one. The Corgis completely freaked out and we had two 30 pound chicken nuggets shaking in bed with us the entire storm. I know many dogs are also afraid of them, as well as afraid of fireworks, car travel, etc. It's hard seeing your furkid suffer! (How many cats flip out at the trip to the vet? All four of mine!)

Calming Collars are based on aromatherapy and are created to help overcome stress and anxiety naturally for your dog or cat. I knew this sounded like something perfect to help Captain out a bit. Each collar is custom made specifically for your pet, and you can even choose which cotton fabric pattern you'd like the collar to be created in! We chose the Jolly Roger print with skulls and crossbones like a pirate flag, since it nearly matched his halter and leash set we use a lot. (Don't worry, if that's not your thing, they have some lovely prints, including dog bones! I think there's just about something for all pets)

When the collar arrived, my mailbox smelled all pretty. LOL! I knew what the package was before I even opened it - it's not that it was that strong, but I could definitely smell it a little. Upon opening it, I was completely surprised at how thick the collar was with the herbs! I was expecting a thin padding with just a little herbs! The clasp was very sturdy, and easy to click shut. (Note: this collar is made to be decorational - do not attach a tie out or leash to this collar as it will not hold up!)

Now let me give you a bit of a warning - the smell after you remove the collar from it's plastic bag (to keep the herbs fresh) is quite strong to most dogs. After all, they have a stronger sense of smell than us humans do. Captain started sneezing immediately after I tried to put it on him - I kind of forgot his allergies (oops!) My suggestion is that you keep the collar near where they are for about an hour - either by their bed or wherever they are - so that they can get used to the smell and aren't overwhelmed. It also will allow you to see if they might be allergic to the herbs too. Luckily, the sneezing subsided with Tucker after I did this, and he was able to wear it with no problems.

It was awfully cute on him - in fact, it looks like a little bowtie! lol I can't say I noticed that much of a change in Captain and his separation anxiety, but maybe that's just Captain - he's my high strung, velcro Corgi. We haven't had any other thunderstorms so I could put it to the test then. He does smell awfully pretty though, and it's kind of calming - for ME! LOL I love the smell of it! As you can maybe see in the photos, his is about 2" wide - you can have them made a little thinner if you'd like.

The Grumpy Princess wanted to model for you too. She's usually the super model around here, so she was feeling a little left out. LOL

One note: after you take the collar off, the smell lingers on their fur for awhile.

The Calm Me Down collar retails for $32 plus shipping. Now for some, this may seem a little high, but there was a ton of herbs in Captain's collar, and I've paid more for collars in the past, so it didn't bother me.

By the way, they even have collars for helping with motion sickness, and to help your pet stay cool during the hot summer months! If you are over on Facebook, be sure to "like" Calming Collars for new product announcements and specials!

Win it! Thanks to Calming Collars, one lucky reader will win a Calm Me Down collar for their cat or dog, in their choice of fabric print and size. To enter, head on over to their fabric page, and let us know what pattern you'd choose if you won, and if this would be for a cat or dog. Feel free to tell us a bit about why your pet could benefit from one. (You know me, I'll take any excuse to hear more about everyone's pets!)

Use It Up, Make Do, Or Do Without

Why do we need so much? I am always amazed at how many things we see at thrift and resale shops that still have tags on them or clearly are brand new. I know some things are gifts that maybe we don't want to hurt someone's feelings, and of course, kids can outgrow things like mad - but really? Do we need 30 pairs of jeans? Do you even wear all 30 pairs? (OK, granted I have a million pairs of shoes myself - or so it seems like it - but I actually do wear them regularly.)

It certainly doesn't help our economy that much, because so many things are made overseas these days.

We have (married) friends that spent $800 a month on their grocery bill alone. I wish I could tell you that they made 100K a year, and that was all organic, but it was mostly overpriced, over processed junk, and they make less than we do. If you mentioned to her anything about maybe making her own bread, all you'd get was this vacant look. Use a coupon? She didn't have time. I was the crazy one for having more than one bottle of salad dressing at home.

Maybe it's because I started working when I was 14 that I understand the value of a paycheck. I made a whopping $4 an hour back then.

...egads, I just realized exactly how long ago that was. *faint*

But why do we need so much? Why do we charge on a credit card with high interest rates for things that really aren't necessary, like the 30th pair of shoes? And why is it so hard to sew a button back on, rather than throw it out in the trash?

If I buy something, such as a shampoo, and I don't like it, I either give it to someone I know who will use it, or I repurpose it myself. Soap is soap, after all, and most shampoos can be watered down and used to wash delicates for instance. The last half cup of veggies from dinner gets turned around into my "stone soup" as I call it. Bananas about ready to die can be turned into banana pancakes. If we need something, and it's not like 100% necessary, we make do with what we have until we have the cash. Before throwing anything into the trash, I always ask myself - can this be repurposed? Can I cut that shirt into rags for DH to use for the car? Can I take the button off those torn pants and save it for when DH loses a button off another pair? (You don't want to know how often that happens with him, lol) Towels that have seen better shower days get put aside for soaking up leaks around here. And if it's outgrown, it gets donated to the thrifts or passed along to someone we know.

Remember the review I did on Hickory Farms before the holidays? Included in it were two little jars of mustard. Those are long since empty, but rather than just toss it into the recycling bin - and the lid in the trash, since we can't recycle those here - I cleaned it, peeled the label off, and now use it to store my homemade spice mixes in. Completely simple to do, didn't cost me a cent, and something stayed out of the landfill.

Think outside the box, and watch your consumption habits.

DVD Review: Dora's Ballet Adventures

My family and I recently received a copy of the new animated Nickelodeon DVD to review, Dora's Ballet Adventures.

As you may know, Dora reigns supreme in our household, so we were excited to have a title containing an episode about ballet - something we're gearing up for around here! Dora's Ballet Adventures contains four episodes: "Dora's Ballet Adventure", "The Super Silly Fiesta", "Dora, La Musico", and "Surprise".

"Dora's Ballet Adventure" is a never before seen episode where Dora is excited to perform in a big dance show. But before she can take the stage, she needs to find her ballet slippers! Will you help her dance her way back to the dance school and find them? The other three episodes aren't completely dance themed, but more fiesta themed with parties and a musical parade in the "Dora, La Musico" episode. If you're wondering if perhaps this DVD is even more girly themed than usual, with the exception of the "Ballet" episode, it's really not. And in all honesty, I don't see why boys can't enjoy the ballet theme too! This DVD is your typical Dora fare, with interactive questions being asked so your kids can shout back at the TV as well as peppered Spanish words for them to learn.

Dora's Ballet Adventures is, unfortunately for some, an exclusive release to Target stores only. If you do not live near a Target store, you can order it via online. The disc has no special features, which kind of makes me sad - this was the perfect opportunity to have a little two minute dance a-long included. How cool would that have been? *sniff, sniff*

Dora's Ballet Adventures will be released this Tuesday, February 22th, 2011. It is full screen edition, and not rated due to being safe for all ages (the 2 to 4 crowd will probably enjoy it the most). The DVD has a total running time of 95 minutes. The suggested retail price is $16.99, but Target's pre-order price is $12.99 as of this posting. (and it does qualify for free shipping with a $50 purchase, see site for details)

Yep, full disclosure as always: I received a copy of this DVD in order to view it and share my thoughts of it. All opinions are my own.

Thrifty Thursday - Kitchen Organizing Idea

I love kitchen gadgets. However, I hate clutter! I have a smaller kitchen without a lot of storage space, and if I can't find the cooking utensil I want easily, I get frustrated. A LOT!

Maybe you have the same problem. Here's an idea - head over to the dollar store or similar bargain place, and pick up an over the door shoe holder. You're looking for one that looks like this:

Use all those pockets to store lightweight kitchen knives, serving spoons, etc that don't get a daily workout, but you still use often enough that you can't live without them. You can simply hang it on the back of a pantry or cabinet door. (Or if you purchase a nicer one, and have wall space, feel free to leave it out in the open on a wall!)

Just be sure that anything you put into the holder is completely clean and most importantly dry, since those aren't really washable - you don't want it to turn into a germ breeding ground!

By having all the tools where you can get to the them easily, you'll save money not thinking you'll have to buy a specific tool because you didn't already have it when you really did. Plus, an organized kitchen is much easier to cook in!

Stretching Ground Beef

If you are trying to cut back your grocery bill, one of the places you might be chopping from is the meat department. The problem can be not only having enough for an entire meal, but most importantly - getting your family to eat it.

Adding in cooked rice and plain oatmeal are two of the easiest additions. TVP, or textured vegetable protein, is another addition, but those who have soy allergies may want to avoid it. Unlike rice and oatmeal though, TVP probably won't be used for any other cooking purposes, so if you are short on pantry space, stick to the other two.

Cook your ground beef almost completely, and when it comes time to drain any grease, be sure to leave a little left in. The biggest mistake is draining all the grease - the bit of grease you'll leave in the pain with the meat will soak up the rice or oatmeal and take on the ground beef flavor. Allow the mixture to simmer for at least five minutes so it has enough time soak it all up. Don't just leave it on low though, because the meat will overcook and dry out!

If you're new to stretching ground beef, you'll probably want to start off with a small amount of rice - 1/8th to 1/4 cup of rice or oatmeal to one pound, or 3/4th a pound of ground beef. Most of the time I use about a half and half mixture - here's my taco filing mixture using rice and ground beef:

Another filler of choice can be barley, but since it takes awhile to cook, I tend to stick to using rice. I make a couple of cups of rice every couple of days and use it to add to soups as well as stretching other dishes myself.

Review: Clean + Green Furniture Refresher

Having a mini petting zoo inside my home means odors appear no matter how much I clean. I use receiving blankets and small lap blankets on the furniture, as well as an extra blanket on the bed, so I can wash them frequently to cut down on pet hair (and hopefully, odor too). I open the windows when the weather is good just to get the air circulating, but it's been awhile with this colder, damp weather. Add in the odors from cooking, and the fireplace, and I know the whole house just needs a refresher.

I used to use a lot of Febreeze and air fresheners, but I have really been trying to cut down on the harsh chemicals used in my home. I want a healthy home! I've tried tricks such as a drop of essential oil in a pan on the fire (as it evaporates, it's like an air freshener), and using the Scentsy warmer, but that doesn't help with odors in fabrics like the sofa and unwashable pet beds. Once upon a time, I used to just reach for the odor eliminators - now I think twice. So I was definitely interested when I was asked if I was interested in reviewing Clean + Green Furniture Refresher.

Clean + Green Furniture Refresher is a safe and green pet cleanup system that is free of harsh chemicals. All of the company's products are non-toxic, non-carcinogenic and eco-friendly, which is something I am looking for in products I am using around the home as much as possible now. The great part about the Furniture Refresher is that you can also use it to remove pet stains too! It's like having two products in one, or one less product in my so-called janitorial closet. ;) It is safe on all water-safe surfaces, and since it's non-flammable, I also don't have to worry about using it on the cat beds that are near the fireplace. (They just love "roasting" themselves over by it - that's a cat for you!) The ingredients list isn't a mile long: cane sugar derivatives, a proprietary blend of botanical extracts, hydrated cellulose, purified water and a natural aerosol propellant.

As soon as the Clean + Green Furniture Refresher arrived, I went to town on spraying it. I could not open that box fast enough - you'd have thought it was a box of dark chocolate! (LOL) Most of the pets were hanging out in our bedroom, so I think I sprayed everything possible in the living room - from the sofa, to my beautiful vintage red chairs, the cat perches (we have three tall ones in that room alone), the pet beds... I'm actually surprised I didn't blow through the whole can in one application. Now, it's hard to tell if the odor goes away when you're used to your pet smells. It's like how a non-pet person most of the time can tell right away if someone has a cat upon entering the home, because you're used to it, and they are not? I can usually smell the odors most once we've been out and about for the afternoon, and come home - that's when I notice it and get cranky. I'll be honest - we came home after running errands the next day and the whole house smelled like a fish market, because one of the cats had dragged their breakfast off into the corner and didn't finish it! We about DIED! (This would be Friday, after our long day across the bridge!) Thanks to Clean + Green, and the windows open, the fishy smell is gone, thankfully!

...and yes, that is the last time I give the cats fish before leaving for the entire day. Ugh!

Sniffing the couch, it seems to have improved. It's not like I had my nose glued to it before though, lol. I'll definitely continue using Clean + Green Furniture Refresher on the pet furniture like the cat trees and the pet beds. Now we don't really have any carpeting except for a small patch in the bedroom, so I can't comment on whether or not it works on carpet odors. I also didn't get a chance to test it out on stains, since knock on wood - we didn't have any issues. (Side note: the RAW diet has really helped with Magick's sensitive stomach issues to the point where if he gets sick, we know he's snuck crunchies from the lone cat hold out, Sabbath - she refuses anything but the dried kibble STILL)

I'm pretty pleased, and glad to know Clean + Green Furniture Refresher is safer not only for my human family, but for my furry family too.

If you are interested in giving Clean + Green Furniture Refresher a try, you can snag a bottle online. Right now, it's on sale for just $7.99, with free shipping on all orders over $30. They have a lot of interesting different products. I noticed they also have a Ferret cage cleaner, and a small animal all purpose that I think I will also try for scrubbing down Grimlock's (rabbit) litter box - all I can is peeeyoooouuuu! (lol) If you'd rather purchase it in person at stores like Pet Pros, you can request a coupon by filling out a short survey on their site - every penny saved is something, right?

Please note: I received the product mentioned above in order to test it out in my home, and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and are not affiliated with any of the companies mentioned in the post.

Random Thoughts Tuesday - The Ranting Edition

randomtuesday

I am completely irritated right now. I knew that it was about time for us to get our property taxes statement, so I hoped online to see it so I wouldn't have a complete heart attack opening the envelope. Guess what? The address that they changed for no apparent reason to an address that doesn't exist in Texas last year - and the reason our taxes were late last year, because I had no clue what was going on after a newbie tax person stopped by our home to assess the house and absolutely confused us - that we had changed last Summer to the right address here in WA - is now back to the nonexistent address is Texas! WT? This is absolutely ridiculous! I'll let DH call this time, because I will really go psycho. Apparently, stupidity is in the air around here. I have never seen such inefficiency as I have since we have moved to this state. Seriously, I am typing this with my jaw clenched, I am that frustrated.

Of course, our property value plummeted yet again, so hurray, we're officially in the hole from what we bought this house for, even with our fixes. I am SO excited. /sarcasm (On the bright side, at least our taxes dropped because of that? LOL)

Today is crawling by. My motivation ran away.

The water still isn't back to normal here from yesterday's power outage. I'm afraid every time we flush that a pipe is going to explode - it's obvious there is a bunch of air in our pipes, and I have no clue why.

...this house is the bane of my existence. lol We have a new leak in the bathroom by the window, too.

I am almost tempted to switch dinner tonight to tacos, because I am totally craving some melted cheesey goodness with tomatoes. mmmm....

Soaring cotton prices, labor costs back retailers into a corner, prices seen rising 10 percent Oh, yippee. Now on top of worrying about food prices, parents have to panic about keeping their kids in underwear and socks. I buy sizes ahead when I find great clearance deals, but I know not everyone has that luxury - or lives in a climate where the season stays the same for 10 months out of the year so it's pretty obvious that any size will never be out of season. You can land hand me down clothes to help save on costs, or resale, but undies and socks is completely different. Can you imagine paying $5 a pair of socks one day?? Yikes!

Geez. The more I think about it, the more depressing it is. Do you choose food, or socks and undies to replace what is tattered and worn for your kids? Of course you'd choose food! Now I know some of the charities ask at the holidays for those things for gifts, but really, how disappointing is that? I like our family donating toys as gifts, because that's fun in a world that can really be depressing. :(

...and then you turn around and see headlines like this one: .World Bank: Food prices at "dangerous levels" - and you just want to scream.

Keep stocking your pantries, ladies. We're in for a bumpy ride. If you think food prices won't rise crazy here in the US, did you just miss those lovely storms that hit? Even South Texas had frost. There goes some fruit crops... add in that lots of food here is imported from areas that are weather affected? Prices will rise, even if slowly - and it's not like most of us have rising income to combat it.

The worst zombie labeled movie either: Return in Red. Netflix had it marked as a zombie movie, so we thought we'd give it a whirl. Yeah, um, that was 104 minutes of my life I will NEVER get back. I can get back the crummy low budget filming, that didn't bother either of us at all - there are some awesome low budget films out there. But it was sllllllooooooowwwww as molasses, with things going on that I swear, all we wanted was to scream at the TV, GET TO THE POINT! And zombies, what zombies? At the end, if that was an excuse for a zombie, I think I need to go cry now. lol Boooooo!

So Much For Valentine's Day...

A little after 4PM yesterday, we lost the power - and didn't get it back until about 1:30 AM. Of course, it has to happen just before I am starting to make dinner, so there went that out the window. Even more annoying, DH had taken advantage of the Redbox free Valentine's Day code to rent The Last Airbender, so we couldn't even watch that. Well, I suppose we could have, on the portable DVD player, but he really wanted to see it on the big screen. Sigh!

On the bright side, we've lost power so often here that I have my routine, and everything is set up so it's not a hassle. I really want to encourage y'all to do the same. Be sure to keep flashlights in each bedroom and room that is often used so when the lights go out, you are fumbling around in the dark trying to come up with a light source. Check the batteries at least once a month to be sure they still work, and the batteries aren't leaking.

And if you do have a little extra cash to spend, I highly recommend picking up the Coleman Quad Lantern. The four panels on each side are removable, so kids can have their own light source for reading and/or walking around the home. I call it our best friend, and keep it in the bedroom near the bed so I can find it easily.

Have an easy to get box that has some fun games and things that you can play together as a family to make the time go by faster. We were playing Battleship together, and then after the munchkin's bedtime, DH and I had some fun playing zombie role playing games. (What if... this power outage was it! What is YOUR next step? LOL)

And don't forget to keep your major traffic areas such as hallways free of clutter. If you have kids, toys happen... but piles of boxes and furniture in odd places can be dangerous. The last thing you want to do is have a cut requiring stitches or a broken bone in the middle of a big storm! If you are unsure, cut power one night and walk through your home. If you are constantly bumping into things, consider rearranging or changing the layout of the home.

Every time we do loose the power for an extended period of time, we identify things that we'd like to have around to make things easier. Once again, my cell phone needed recharged - in all fairness, it drains through the battery nearly daily these days - so this is my next must-buy item:

It has a weather radio - which we don't have, eek - flashlight, plus the charger built in for $16.95. Of course it's wind up, but that's what kid labor is for. LOL I'm kidding. ;)

The other thing is that I need to stop being so efficient in putting away drinks as soon as I buy them! All of the juice was in the fridge, and since I didn't dare open it, it was water only for us all. Boring on Valentine's Day!

Blog Tour: Dannon Small Steps To A Better You

Mom Central recently asked me if I was interested in participating in the Dannon "Small Steps to a Better You" blog tour. As you may know, we eat a lot of yogurt around here, so I happily said yes!

Dannon is trying to encourage us all to take small steps towards the ever-elusive goal of living a healthier lifestyle. For me, that means continuing to try to eat healthier. Yogurt is already a big part of our daily diet in our family; we each eat at least one serving a day. Here is my gentle reminder though to beware which yogurt you choose to have if you are counting calories - those cups can vary anywhere from 50 calories on up to 210! It doesn't seem like a lot at first glance, but those calories can really add up over the day!

One of my small steps is that I always walk around the outer part of the grocery store, and go through the fresh fruit, meats, dairy etc, even if I am just running in for one thing. Unless there is a really great deal on something in the aisles, I avoid them so I am not tempted to pick up food I shouldn't. Not only are the extra steps throughout the store a bit of extra exercise for me in this rain soaked state of ours (lol), but I can also snag any great deals I might find on marked down fresh foods! It's a win-win situation for me. ;) Do you have any ideas for healthy small steps? I'd love to hear them!

Now through February 28th, when you purchase Dannon yogurt, look for the UPC code found under the barcode of any Dannon product. You can enter that code over at dannon.com/smallsteps for four daily chances to win instantly! what can you win, you ask? Awesome prizes, like:

Three (3) Grand Prizes: free groceries for a year, valued at $7,800.
Fifty (50) First Prizes: free groceries for a month, valued at $550.
One hundred (100) Second Prizes: will win free groceries for a week, valued at $150.

I don't know about you, but even winning the second prize would have me doing a celebrating jump! $150 worth of free groceries is like a major shopping spree for me! What would you splurge on if you won? By the way, you can get a free entry via that link above if you need it, since there is no purchase necessary in order to win. Good luck!

I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Dannon and received a coupon and gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Review: Surf Showstopper Wristbag

Even though it doesn't feel like it, Spring and Summer are just on the horizon. All I can say, is that I really hope it arrives soon - I have had enough of Winter! With the better weather, you might be thinking of fun in the sun, like playing at the park and visiting the beach of water park.

...I am. I am dreaming of visiting the beach. I think we only ended up going twice this past Summer, not nearly enough. This year, we plan to do a lot more hiking and camping, and with that - beach walking! The problem with a lot of these warmer weather activities is keeping your valuables safe. You can hide some things under the seats in the car, but what do you do with your cell phone, debit/credit card, and ID? These things don't exactly fit into your swimsuit pockets - if they even have one. And if you bring along a purse, that means you either have to carry it everywhere, or babysit it all day just sitting there. Boring!

The Surf Showstopper Wristbag conveniently fits on your wrist to keep your valuables safe and secure. The black outer material is water repellent and durable, so if you have water spray from being on a tour boat, or if your kids toss a bucket towards you, the contents inside should be alright. The underside that touches your skin is a soft "toweling" material that can absorb your sweat and moisture.

There are two zippered compartments: one that's easy to slide in some folded cash or change, a key, etc, and then a second, larger compartment that's big enough for your IDs, cards, and a phone the size of an iPhone. (or larger MP3 player) That second compartment actually has an inner zipper as well for you to keep the phone separate from the cards - so this way when you pull out your phone, you don't have to worry about your cards falling out. The neat part of these zippers is that they have little "lips" for tucking away the zipper so you're not stuck hearing them jingle. This isn't a huge deal if you're just walking around, but if you're running or rollerblading, it helps cut down on distracting noises.

The arm band itself has a Velcro closure combined with a sturdy clasp above it. It's fully adjustable, and it is wearable without securing the Velcro if you have a larger arm. (guys could wear it thanks to this, but the logo on the side is pink, keep this in mind! lol) And because of that clasp, if you have a smaller ankle, you probably could stealth wear it under your skirt or pants while traveling - it fits mine alright. Remember though, that without the Velcro being used, it could possibly slide around a bit then.

I had it secured on my arm/wrist with the Velcro and went flicking my arms around - it didn't budge at all when it was adjusted probably, so you don't have to have any fears of it accidentally slipping off your arm as you are pointing over the edge of a boat or a pool. My phone, while not an iPhone, easily fit inside, along with some cash, my ID, debit card, a disposable wipe, and even a small pocketknife in front zippered compartment.* *Note I was testing this for hiking purposes, if you decide to do the same, remember it can be considered a concealed weapon and be sure to remove it before having it in carry on luggage or crossing through metal detectors!

When the Surf Showstopper arrived, it came in this pretty pink storage bag, great for keeping it in the off-season, or in your luggage while traveling! I know I am going to get a lot of use out of it over the warmer months. Plus, since it's black, it matches everything in my wardrobe, and I don't have to worry about it showing dirty stains so much like a lighter color would.

I actually also found a great use for mine outside of the beach. Anyone who's a diehard thrifter or yard saler knows that it can be impractical and dangerous to bring along your purse into the store or event. It just takes a split second to walk away from your purse or be distracted because something caught your eye, and a thief can strike. I would always try to find an outfit before DH that had good pockets. Well, I put it to the test at our Goodwill by the pound a few days ago. My debit card, ID, cell phone, and spare key all fit easily into it, and it was snug enough that it didn't slide around it. It was actually just perfect. I was so pleased! It will definitely be making the rounds with me during the upcoming garage sale season.

I received the product mentioned above in order to try out and share my opinions of it.

For Those Afraid Of The Kitchen...

I never really spent any time in the kitchen growing up. My mother will tell you it's family lore about how as a teen, I tried to make a frozen pizza in the oven - with the cardboard. It probably is a miracle that I didn't set the whole oven on fire that day.

Even when I moved out and lived on my own, cooking really wasn't my thing. A gourmet meal to me was opening a can of green beans and sprinkling it with some Italian seasoning. I subsisted for years on fruits, veggies, and bagels and cheese products. As a vegetarian, I avoided the meat section like the plague and never learned to cook any of it until Bear, my second Corgi, came along, and needed home cooked meats out of necessity. (food allergies) Even then, it was hold my breath, toss it in a pan, count a couple of minutes, then serve it up trying not to gag.

When DH and I were engaged in October 2005, that was the extent of my cooking knowledge. I started watching Food Network whenever I had the chance, and then when we finally got our first apartment, went from the frying pan into the fire. Seriously.

I learned the slow cooker is my best friend, how to buy meat - and cook it! - without gagging, how to bake my own bread and biscuits, that mistakes when cooking are generally fixable but not mistakes when baking... you get the drift.

I want this post to be encouragement for those who are afraid of the kitchen. It's not a scary place, really. If I can survive in the kitchen - so can you! Check your fear at the door, call recipes your science experiments if you have to - do whatever you need to in order to make it fun. If you fear it, and look at it as just a chore, you're going to bomb. Mistakes happen even to the best of cooks.

You too can be queen of the kitchen!

Review: snoozies!

Shoes are not to be worn in our home, and since we are virtually carpet free here, we all wear slippers! Some styles of slippers can be uncomfortable, and others can be dangerous on wood flooring - it's easy to slip. So slipper hunting can be a bit of an ordeal around here!

Meet snoozies!. snoozies! are these nifty crossover style of foot coverings - socks meet slippers. They are warm and cozy like a slipper, but conform to your feet like a sock. The outside is a fun print fabric down in a brushed fleece material, and the inside is lined in a soft Sherpa fleece. I received a pair in the Multi Colored Dog Paw print - aren't they adorable?

If you are like me, and you like to sit on the sofa or bed with your feet curled up under you, you are going to love snoozies! Normally I have to kick my slippers off when I sit on the couch because they are uncomfortable after a few minutes, and it gets to be a pain with as often as I am getting up and down. I'd just wear thick socks, but I have slipped on more than one occasion around here. Snoozies! have this non skid pattern on the bottom that makes them A LOT safer to wear. I tried to slide out on them in the kitchen and couldn't.

I've been on my feet a lot this week, and I couldn't wait to ditch my shoes and snuggle my feet in the snoozies! and recover. They don't have a ton of padding, of course, but they are so snuggly on my feet, and just felt comforting to my tired feet. Can you see how cozy the inside looks in this photo? (I hope so?)

As you probably know, no matter how many times you mop and scrub your wood and tile floors, you'll still end up with dingy socks. Snoozies! are completely machine washable and will not shrink, so you can just toss them in the washer (I suggest skipping the fabric softener, though) and then either hang them to dry, or tumble dry low. Being able to wash them so simply means you don't have to worry about them looking dirty and certainly not have to worry about dead skin cell build up (Sorry, it's the germophobe in me coming out! lol)

Snoozies are available in women's sizes for $12.00. They are also available for men's and children's sizes, too! (Kids sizes run about $10.00) There are so many different pattern styles to choose from - they even have booties that will help keep your ankles warm too, if you live in a colder climate! $12ish is such a good price on these too. We were shopping this past week, and I noticed a bunch of slippers that were marked 75% off. I have to tell you that even though those would have been a bit cheaper with the sale price, they were poorly made compared to the snoozies!. I don't feel that those slippers would have lasted more than a couple of months, if that - plus they weren't washable. The better value was definitely the snoozies!

If you are looking for a last minute Valentine's Day gift that is practical, I'd suggest picking up a pair of snoozies! In fact, I fell in love so much with the pair of snoozies! I received to review, that I went ahead and ordered the zebra print pair via Amazon, just so I had a back up when I was washing them! (They are eligible for Amazon Prime, if you have it.) I hope there might be some Halloween prints down the road - I'd love a skull & crossbones pair too. (See? I told you I was in love with them! lol)

I received a pair of snoozies! in order to try them out and share my opinions of them. All thoughts are my own, and yes, I really do love them - I'm even wearing them as I am typing this out!)

A Disappearing Act

I'm sorry I disappeared over the last few days - we have been so busy, and by the time I had a free moment I wasn't sure anything I would type would make sense. I was SO tired!

Thursday we took advantage of the beautiful weather and went for a hike at the park. It felt so wonderful to have the sun on our skin! When we came back, we went to work again in the yard. It seems like it's never ending! I did score a few nice plastic pots at the Dollar Tree on the way home for $1 too, so I am excited to set those up soon! I was mostly turning dirt while DH was stacking branches that need to be cut down for yard waste. We still have some leaves to rake up too in the one corner, and then we'll be spreading some of the compost where we plan to plant. We leave the leaves in the one corner because the soil is so sandy that if we didn't, it would all run down the hill with the rains. The dirt in our yard is so sad :( That's why I try to do as much container gardening and raised beds as I can.

I've been on the hunt for seeds since while I still have a little extra left from last year, I'd obviously like to plant a lot more this year - but no one has anything but rose bushes in at the moment. I'll keep stalking everyone I guess.

Then yesterday we headed across the bridge for DH's eye appointment. We started our day at Goodwill by the pound as I call it (It's an outlet store where clothing and textiles are $1.59 a pound). Even though we arrived shortly after it opened, there were folks there with cart fulls - one had SEVEN carts. Seriously. He had a look out stationed to keep track of them.

...and then there was the woman with a newborn, who left the cart at the front of the store with the baby in the carseat. Seriously - anyone could have made it out the door and been gone so fast! Why do women do that??? The sad part is she even had her husband/partner/whatever with her, except he was too busy grabbing shoes to obviously sell back home to bother with holding the baby.

Grrrr.

Anyways, my "goal list" was mostly looking for vintage linens, and cloth napkins, fabric, etc. Oh, and a small valance for one of our windows. It was already so picked over, I really didn't come out with much. We purchased a couple of vintage books - one was from 1918, and it wasn't that we needed the books, but I couldn't bear to see them being trashed. (There was a guy who was digging through the book bins just flinging them across, destroying some of them. Y'all have no idea how much I wanted to thwap him with a nice, thick book!) I did find two sort of ugly napkins that I ended up taking as back up, and the kiddo ended up with an Old Navy t-shirt that said Here Comes Trouble. (haha!)

I used to love my weekly trips to this GW when we lived closer, but I think this last trip cured me for awhile. We also hit up another GW, where I managed to score a brand new dish towel, the linen kind like I like, for 99 cents.

Not a lot of thrifting luck. Oh, sure, if you like clutter, there are always lots of things to clutter your home. No thanks. I don't even find most of it tempting.

...and I've totally come to the conclusion that most women in Washington do not ever wear skirts. There hardly ever is any skirts at the thrifts we visit, and if there is, it's usually either plain black like an older suit skirt, or the same old floral patterns over... and over... and over.... again. I swear it's the same three fabric bolts. Trying to find ankle length skirts around here is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Ditto on the shirts - lately all I see are either very matronly button down shirts that I think came from the late 80s/early 90s, or tops that you have to fear your chest popping out of. There seems to be no in between! I envy those of you who can find more modest clothing in your thrifts!

Then we had a really nice lunch at the Olive Garden thanks to a gift card I had cashed out for from one of my survey panels - YUM! I tried the new chicken ravioli dish (I forget the name?) and it was soooo good! DH's appointment was across the parking lot, and as we were crossing, they called and said their doctor was running late and pushed out appointment back 15 minutes. Not a big deal, there was a Sports Authority in the same shopping complex so I asked DH if we could waste a few minutes in there. I like visiting the camping equipment! lol It wasn't a wasted trip at least, because they had some Coleman watch giftsets on clearance, and DH has been needing a new watch for work (his gets a beating) and this one was partially waterproof so it was perfect. We get to the register and I was distracted with the kiddo, so I let DH pay and walked out. Big mistake - when he came out, I asked him for the receipt and yep, go figure - he was charged the full price. Sigh! So I had to go through the hassle of doing the return, and of course, the clerk was having issues and yeah... you know my luck. So DH hurried over for his glasses while I finished that up, and he checked in for the appointment.

This was a TOTAL disaster. I am not sure what was going on, but I was so angry when they kept seeing other people before my DH. And hour and a half later, we finally choose to leave. We would have left sooner, but DH needed those glasses so bad I was biting my tongue and telling him we could wait. Finally I was so frustrated I just told them it was outrageous that they were ignoring DH's appointment and left. I mean c'mon! We had asked several times about how much longer it would be, too.

...apparently someone else in the office found out about what happened, because they called to apologize later in the day. Still doesn't make me happy, because we were all the way on that side of town specifically for that, and half our day was wasted. <<<<---- this makes me a cranky mami. lol

We finished off our day visiting the Grocery Outlet that we used to shop when we lived closer. I used to find some great deals there, so I am always excited whenever we have a chance to stop by. Sadly, not so good this time around - sniff, sniff. I had been hoping to score some #10 cans, since they usually have some great prices on them, but they only had a couple this go round - salsa, cheese sauce, and jalapenos. If I buy anymore salsa or cheese sauce, I think I am going to go crazy. We have plenty! lol At least I managed to stock up on some yogurt and cheese for a little cheaper than coupons at the grocery store, so that made me happy. Oh, and I grabbed some Sara Lee bagels for 99 cents a package, so I wouldn't have to bake today. They had the small bagels which are the perfect size for kid, and then I grabbed some everything bagels too. Mmmm... I do so love bagels! and they came in handy, because I was too tired to make anything else for dinner when we came home. LOL I couldn't get into bed fast enough!

Recipe: Slow Cooker Black Bean Chili

I almost decided not to post this recipe, because in all honestly, I made a big boo-boo making it. I made two changes - well, one wasn't that big. The recipe calls for multiple peppers, but since green was the only one on sale, I skipped a pepper. I just couldn't see spending $1.79 for a red pepper and bumping my recipe cost over my usual threshold. That really didn't affect it. My boo-boo was thinking that I could add in the leftovers of a can of tomato paste that was about to go bad from the fridge. It totally turned the whole recipe around - phooey. It was easily saved on my end, but it didn't come out like it's supposed to, obviously. So stay away from thinking you can add anything different into this one! lol

Oh, I also used dried beans instead of the canned variety in my pictures, so if they look a little different to you, that's why.

2 cans black beans, undrained
2 cans diced tomatoes, undrained
1 large onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
1 red pepper, chopped
1 lb sausage, drained
chili powder
cumin
oregano
1 can whole kernel corn

Brown the sausage, drain well. I choose to brown the onions a bit with the sausage so it would pick up the flavor some, but you don't have to do it.

Next, you'll want to add the beans into the slow cooker:

Chop the peppers and onions, and add them in:

Tomatoes, sausage, and spices, to taste. I just sprinkled a bit, then added more later.

About an hour before it should be done, you'll want to add in the can of corn, and stir everything together. You can add more spices to taste here. This one is really thick, so you can serve it over white rice to stretch the recipe even further.

Want to see what I mean about not adding tomato paste in? It completely changed the dish.

A friend gave me the chocolate/peanut butter variety to try the other day- OMG they are so good! I love the crispy texture, so different from granola bars! Anyway- fiber... About the only thing I regularly check for fiber content is bread. I don't buy anything with less than 3 grams per slice. I just started a new workout routine and am trying to eat better- I think these bars would be a nice addition to my diet!

Review: Big Kahuna Original Gourmet Blend (Giveaway!)

Spices and seasonings are a big part of every kitchen arsenal. You can make anything taste great with the right blend of spices - probably even a tire! LOL ;) I rely on spices and seasonings in my kitchen a lot, so I was more than happy to try out BKW Seasonings Original Gourmet Blend in my kitchen.

BKW Seasonings is a family owned business that got it's origins back in the 1960's when they wanted to create a unique buffalo-style wing. They opened a small take-out restaurant near the University of Tennessee campus called Big Kahuna Wings back in 1997, and those wings were voted BEST WINGS in Knoxville at the annual "War of the Wings."

Big Kahuna Original Gourmet Blend is an all-purpose blend originally created for those famous wings and for fried chicken, but can be used on so many other things. I decided to give it a whirl on some french fries:

Yes, those are frozen fries out of a bag. You caught me! lol I was out of potatoes, and that giant bag was still lurking in the freezer. Here they are again:

I turned them into yummy Chili Cheese fries! I had actually made some a few days earlier using the first half of the bag of fries, and they were sadly lacking. Maybe it's just that we're not used to frozen fries anymore, but they were super bland, even with the chili on them. This second batch with the Big Kahuna Original Gourmet Blend was a HUGE difference and I was sad we had finished off the bag of fries, because I actually wanted more! lol I think I will try it out on some steak next.

A 3.5 oz container of Big Kahuna Original Gourmet Blend retails for $4.59, or if you're like me and use spices and seasonings frequently in your meal preparation, you can snag a 5 pound container too. BKW Seasonings are also available in other blends, like Cajun, Fire, and a Light All-Purpose seasoning. Random Tuesday Thoughts - I Married A Disaster

randomtuesday

We are like giddy little kids over ZomBCon. I know some of you are sick and tired of hearing about it, but it's like almost going to the Super Bowl for us. We are grade A geeky zombie dorks! Look what I ordered for DH for Valentine's Day - Ten Little Zombies: A Love Story Haha! I totally still need an anniversary gift - I can't believe we'll be married five years in March - where on earth does all the time go??? It doesn't feel like five years at all!!

Since we went to Goodwill yesterday, I thought I would save some time and pick up some fruits from Save-A-Lot - I was shocked at how bad their fruits and veggies looked. I know we are out of season for many varieties, but the onions were rotting, and the apples were so shriveled, they would have only been good for applesauce. at that point I just grabbed the tomatoes I had already bagged up and left. I paid a few cents more for apples at Safeway, but at least they looked a little more alive. Geesh. Some third world countries have better produce than we do!

I want an old fashioned root cellar.

G-rated 'Dora' video from toy store turns out to be an X-rated shocker for Queens family I'm sorry, but just because it's a wrapped video does not mean you shouldn't view any DVD before showing it to your children. How hard is that? We always check over the DVDs before viewing it with the kiddo, to be sure it doesn't contain anything we disagree with. DH is a little more lenient than me on that one; granted, if it was me, the TV probably would never be on. I didn't even have a TV when we were married; I simply used Netflix to view movies here and there. Plus, to get back to that story, we have that DVD and hers looks off... I guess maybe the picture is completely washed out, but the characters are cut off on the side - I'm wondering if it was an illegal copy someone switched and returned to make money. Wouldn't you notice that though when buying it? C'mon?

I finally won the battle of the VHS tapes. Except for the couple we have in Spanish, and the original Night of the Living Dead, DH is willing to part with them all. Thank the heavens! Y'all have no idea how much something so little makes me so happy right now, lol. That's 2/3rds of a bookshelf reclaimed!

Speaking of DH, he's a disaster this week. First he had a wicked nosebleed that stained everything he was wearing (grrr), then he came home from work with broken glasses. Since that was his back up pair, I had to make an appointment for a new set. Sigh! (The bright side is it means we are going across the bridge for sure = Goodwill by the pound! YAY!) For a few days though he's stuck wearing his old prescription - I'm sure he's going to come home today cranky. I'm telling you, the guy needs to have a bubble all around him to keep him out of trouble, lol

...was it bad of me that I kept the glasses and glued them back? LOL They won't work long term, but I figure it will last a car trip in case of emergency. He IS a disaster, after all.

I crave mozarella sticks.

Time To Start Gardening...

It's the first week of February - you know what that means! The start of gardening season! It's time to start getting those seedlings up and running!

If you haven't already, start saving those paper egg cartons - they are perfect to plant your seedlings in, and they don't cost you any extra. I only have about a dozen, since we also use them to make homemade fire starters around here, but it's a good start. We can't really put anything in the ground until the very end of May/beginning of June here.

What are your gardening goals this year? Are you mostly planting one kind of vegetable/fruit? I really hope that my tomatoes take off this year (I am still so mad about someone switching the label on my tomato plants around and ending up with all those cherry tomatoes! Some folks are just rotten!), and at the cost of peppers, I'm going to town on those. I'm also going to start my onions soon. My strawberries from last year seemed to make it through the Winter just fine so far, so hopefully we'll end up with a lot more from that one. And we plan to introduce some blackberry starts towards the back of the yard in hopes to have plenty of fresh blackberries down the road.

I may not have a green thumb, but I'm learning along the way! I checked out a bunch of gardening books from the library the other day in order to check out how they were setting their gardens up - since we have more of a limited space, I'd like to make sure we don't waste any of it. (and argh, I hope my gardens are slug free this year!)

DVD Review: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie's Masquerade

My family and I recently received a copy of the new CGI animated Disney DVD Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie's Masquerade to review.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie's Masquerade is the latest release from the preschool aimed show. There is a never seen before episode in "Minnie's Masquerade", plus there are four previously aired episodes "Minnie's Mouseke-Calendar", "A Surprise For Minnie", "Secret Spy Daisy" and "The Friendship Team". Although the theme seems to be Minnie Mouse, you'll see plenty of other Disney characters in this one including everyone's favorite, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, and Daisy Duck. The episodes included are slightly more geared towards girls, but who says boys can't enjoy them too? ;)

(Sorry feedreaders, you'll have to click over to view this clip as I don't have a direct link to it)

This is a Mickey Mote compatible title, and this DVD is available with the Mickey Mote if you don't already own one. (See my review on the Mickey Mote here) You do not need the Mickey Mote in order to play in "Discovery Mode"; you can simply use your DVD player's remote. (However, I would supervise in this case, since you don't want your DVD remote to be abused too much!) There are two levels of Discovery Mode; Level One is very simple - such as pressing a button that corresponds to the color of the dress Minnie is looking for. Level One is great for the 2-3 crowd, while Level 2 brings out the more detailed questions and may be more appropriate for the ages 3-4 and up crowd.

The box set also contains a little mask inside that kids can color and wear while watching the Masquerade episode! This disc uses Disney's Fast Play, a navigation utility that automatically starts the disc as soon as it's put in the player and pretty much remembers your viewing preferences. It also earns points in the Disney Movie Rewards program, so be sure to add in the code to your Rewards account when you open the box!

If you are interested in adding this title to your Disney movie collection, they currently have a coupon out that will save you $5 off the purchase of the boxed set that includes the Mickey Mote! Visit your Disney Movie Rewards account, or click here for more information and to download the coupon.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie's Masquerade will be available this Tuesday, February 8th, 2011. It's rated TV-Y and geared for the 2-5 set. Full screen, it has a total running time of 120 minutes long. the suggested retail price of the DVD box set including the Mickey Mote is $29.99, while the stand alone DVD has a suggested retail price of $19.99. Right now, Amazon has the stand alone DVD available for just $13.99 on pre-order. (Netflix users: As of this posting, this DVD is listed on the site, but without a release date. Simply at it to your saved list to be notified of a streaming or disc availability date)

I received the DVD mentioned above in order to view and share my thoughts on. All opinions are my own, and not that of Disney. All links included are for your convenience, they are not referral links.

DVD Review: The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 3

My family and I recently received a copy of the new animated DVD, The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 3, to review.

The Super Hero Squad Show features characters from the Marvel comics family - Wolverine, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc, who all live in Super Hero City. While they have many of the same features of their look in comic books, the characters on this show have definitely been created to appeal more to kids, almost like mini-me versions of themselves. The Cartoon Network series is kind of a good way to introduce your kids to comic books which normally aren't always appropriate for their age range, especially as we are on the horizon of a lot of comic book character movies coming out this Summer. If you are a comic book geek, you'll either find plenty of stupid humor in this series, or kind of cringe at the fact that it's not like your comic books.

The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 3 continue on with episodes from season one: "Tremble At The Might Of...M.O.D.O.K.!", "Mental Organism Designed Only For Kisses!" (um, *cough* what is that as a title on a kids show?? good grief!), "Invader From The Dark Dimension!", "Tales of Suspense!", "Stranger From A Savage Land!", "Mysterious Mayhem At Mutant High!", and "Election Of Evil!"

<<<---- I typed all those in my evil superhero laugh. Just wanted to let know that! Mwhahahaaa! ;) Like the past volumes, the main villain is Doctor Doom. The Super Hero Squad is trying to beat Doctor Doom to all the pieces of the Infinity Sword that was previously broken in battle.

This show is rated TV-Y7, and while younger viewers can enjoy it, you may want to use your discretion. It has the usual cartoon violence, of course, and some of the humor can be borderline as to whether or not it's appropriate for younger viewers. Kids will laugh at the slapstick humor, but it's more of a matter of do you want them repeating or trying things themselves. (Comic book geek Dads with a warped sense of humor like my DH seem to love this show. I, on the other hand, end up rolling my eyes more often than not. lol)

The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 3 does contain a bit of bonus features - there is an interview with Grey DeLisle, an actress most known for her voice over work in a TON of cartoons - you'd be amazed at how many she's done! On the Super Hero Squad Show, she does the voices of Ms. Marvel and Enchantress. There is also a small villain profiles section, and some concept art included on the disc, as well as a few trailers. Not a lot for comic book geeks to crazy over, but it's just the right amount for kids.

The Super Hero Squad Show: Quest For The Infinity Sword! Volume 3 will be available this Tuesday, February 8th, 2011, wherever DVDs are sold. It's rated TV-Y7 (see above), with a total running time of 154 minutes. The suggested retail price is 414.98, but Amazon has it available on pre-order for just $10.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is not currently available, but you can always check the site periodically)

I received a copy of the DVD above in order to view and share my thoughts of it. All opinions are my own.

Menu Planning Monday - Must Bake!

I love the first few days after having worked in our food storage - I remember which shelf has what so it's in and out, haha!

Tip: Have a bazillion cans of pork & beans and you're tired of eating it as a side dish? Use it in soups and stews! seriously! They are the perfect addition to many tomato and beef based soups.

I need to get into the kitchen this afternoon and get to baking! We're all out of bread again, and I'd like some sundried tomato rolls for lunch tomorrow. Oh, and I promised the kiddo we'd bake cupcakes. I'm leaving Friday open, because we're contemplating whether it might be a good day to do something fun or not. Depending on what we decide (which really depends on the weather), we'll either pick up something fun, or if we stay home, I'll make homemade pizza - I've been craving it again! I had pizza made by a company this past week, and it was so BLAH. I can do better! (Isn't it sad when you want to be happy you didn't have to cook, but frustrated because you know you're a better cook AND you can do it cheaper? lol)

Monday: slow cooker black bean chili (will share recipe)

Tuesday: homemade chicken nuggets, mac & cheese, garlic cheese biscuits

Wednesday: Slow Cooker BBQ Ribs

Thursday: Slow Cooker Simple Beef Stew

Friday: Open?

Saturday: Mexican Lasagna

Sunday: recipe of the week

Rolling Up The Sleeves...

...and attacking things around the home. Yesterday, DH was home so I put him to work, haha.

One of the things I did was delve into my food storage. Of course I keep it clean and organized, but yesterday I did something I don't normally - I went through and pulled aside everything that's expiring in the next three months. To say I was a little shocked at what remained is an understatement. Admittedly, I am one who shops in cycles - once or twice a year, I'll break out the coupons and really go to town to stock up on things like toothpaste, cleaning products, etc. Take for instance, soup. I had stocked up so well towards the end of last Spring that I really hadn't bought that much since. Once I pulled aside those cans, I think I had maybe a dozen total left. Yikes! My three month storage suddenly looked more like one month, if that. Plus, when I tried to menu plan ahead, I realized there were a lot more holes than I expected. The only canned veggies we have right now are variations of corn and carrots - no wonder I couldn't find any spinach the other night. (I kept swearing I had at least one more! It was SO frustrating!)

DH helped me this time and I think this time he actually "got" it about how quickly our food supply could dwindle if it was all we had. Half of you are rolling your eyes saying the grocery store is less than a mile away (lol) and it is - but if DH would even just get his hours cut, there goes my grocery money - not to mention, check out those storms (hehe) going on throughout the US - if we get hit here, chances are DH is stuck at work, and we're on our own here.

So we wrote out our "need now" and "could be restocked if the price is right" lists. I didn't end up getting to go to the restaurant supply store this past week, so we are hoping to go this week.

We also headed out to Target to restock some pet supplies, and I swear, that places is muy dangerous to me. lol We each scored new shoes, we're stocked up on cat litter, and DH bought me a Valentine's Day gift of sorts - I've had a buffet warmer on my wish list (towards the bottom, in all fairness), and we found the Oster 3 Bin Buffet Server on clearance for $25.

...and here's the reason why he so happily bought it for me, besides the price. (You knew there had to be a catch, right?)

My inlaws are planning to visit this summer.

Long time readers know I held my breath typing that one out.

Hello, drama. Can't wait to see you again. /sarcasm.

Would it be bad of me to change the bedroom doorknob to a deadbolt? ;)

The floor in the back hallway that leads to the back door is ruined, again. Now we had already ripped up that whole section just as we had moved in, and replaced it. (My daddy did a killer job on that one for us!) We've fixed the roof, so where that particular leak is coming from that causes it, is beyond me. I've thrown my hands up on this one. We have to fix it again, of course - it's a high traffic area and I don't want anyone to fall through the floor. (I actually did, before we moved in - can you say traumatizing? lol) So basically this spring, half the floor in my house is going to have to be ripped apart. Grrrr. (Remember, we still need to fix our bedroom floor too) Anyone want to trade this house for a RV trailer? I'm ready to throw the towel in.

So who are you cheering for today in the game? I'll toss my hat in for the Steelers.
