Recipe: Easy Chicken Nuggets

Have you ever looked at the ingredients list on the back of commercial chicken nuggets? You haven't? If you haven't and you're not ready to always make them yourself, you might not want to look. lol I stopped buying them awhile back myself, and I just make my own. I wanted to make a more "frugal" chicken tender - instead of making them using an egg, milk, etc, I wanted to skip all that. This is so SIMPLE, really, anyone can do it, and it's super cheap. When you compare the price per pound at the grocery store with making it yourself, you can't beat it - plus, you skip out on the extra ingredients no one needs.

You can make a big batch ahead of time and then freeze the extra for lunches, by the way. If you use a microwave, simply warm them up for a couple of minutes. I put ours in the oven so they stay "crunchy".

2 pound of boneless, skinless chicken
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon paprika (if you'd rather, you can use Italian seasonings, and they are just as yummy!)
Oil of choice

Mix the flour and the spice(s) together in a wide bowl. (My flour looks dark to some of you because it's wheat) next, you'll want to get the chicken into the right size shapes for your family. To get the chicken "thinner" (which means it cooks faster!), you'll want to flatten it out with a meat mallet. (If you don't have one, a sturdy pan with a piece of plastic wrap over the chicken works too!) Trim the chicken into strips (using scissors or a sharp knife) and cut those in half across the middle to make nuggets.

Before the next step, you'll want to pour some oil into a large skillet (about 1" deep) and begin letting it heat up on medium-high heat.

Next, you'll want to dredge the chicken through the flour mixture, making sure it's completely covered. If you have the patience, by the time you finish dredging all your chicken, you'll notice that the flour looks like it has been absorbed into the chicken - you can always dredge it through a second time. (I do this myself)

Carefully place several of the pieces of chicken into the hot oil. Depending on how thick your chicken is, you'll want to let it cook on each side anywhere from 2 minutes to 4 minutes for the thicker pieces. When you turn the chicken over using tongs or a fork, you'll want to see it starting to look golden brown.

Serve with dipping sauce of choice.

Cost:
chicken $1.89 lb (x2)
flour: $0.25
paprika $0.10
oil: $0.50
Total: $4.63

DVD Review: Dora's Halloween Parade

My family and I recently received a copy of the new animated Nickelodeon DVD Dora's Halloween Parade to review.

Halloween is two months away - are you ready to start carving Jack 'O Lanterns and hang cobwebs in the window? Dora is! This spooky themed release from the popular preschool show features Dora the Explorer, Boots, and all their friends, ready to help get you in the mood for trick or treat! The four episode DVD includes: "Halloween Parade", "Boo!", "The Backpack Parade" and "Dora, La Musico".

In "Halloween Parade", everyone has their costumes picked out and ready to go, except for Little Monster. (I was scratching my head, isn't Little Monster already a Halloween costume, when you think about it? lol) Dora - who's dressed as a bumblebee - will help Little Monster find a costume so he can march in the Halloween Parade too. "Boo!" is the episode that shows how Dora and Boots meet Little Monster and help bring him home before midnight. (Really, this episode should have been shown BEFORE "Halloween Parade", but I guess that messes up their title?) The remaining two episodes aren't really Halloween related, but they both center around parades, so it sort of ties in.

Once again, Nickelodeon has kind of broke my heart, because there are no special features included. Sniff, sniff. Well, unless you include the "count the pumpkins" on the DVD cover question on the DVD case. (Pffft)

Let me tell you, my daughter was ALL OVER this one. lol

Dora's Halloween Parade is available now at your favorite place to purchase DVD's. It is full screen format and not rated - safe for all ages (geared more towards the 2-4 crowd). The total running time is 97 minutes long. the suggested retail price is $16.99, but Amazon has it available for $13.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is not currently available, but you can stream other Dora episodes instantly.)

I received a copy of this DVD in order to view it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

DVD Review: iCarly The Complete 3rd Season

My family and I recently received a copy of iCarly: The Complete 3rd Season on DVD to review.

iCarly is a wildly popular live action tween show on the Nickelodeon network centering around Carly, Sam, and Freddy, who do a popular teen webshow. Other characters include Spencer, Carly's slightly deranged (lol) older brother who she lives with, and Gibby, Carly's nemesis. Unlike past seasons, Nickelodeon has finally released the entire season in one release, so no waiting for the second half of the season to be released! (Yippee!) This season starts off at the start of the school year, with Carly's birthday, and Spencer getting a haircut. The big storyline of the season was Carly's new room (which I have to say, even *I* want! lol).

Here's the episode list: "iGot A Hot Room", "iDo", "iSell Penny Tees", "iGet Pranky", "iSam's Mom" (which features Jane Lynch from Glee), "iPity the Nevel", "iHire An Idiot", "iStart A Fan War", "iOMG", and "iParty With Victorious", which is partnered with another tween show, Victorious.

As usual, the episodes are your typical iCarly fare - somehow something always seems to go wrong, either thanks to Spencer or Sam. I've always admitted that as a parent I am not that fond of Sam's character on the show, simply because she never really seems to be punished for the trouble she's caused, but it does lead to some humor on the show. Miranda Cosgrove, who plays Carly, really does a great job as the lead character, as really does everyone on the show. The writing is good, the stories catch the 'tween crowd's attention, and even adults will admit to enjoying watching this show, which speaks volumes.

The two disc set does contain a little bit of special features: a tour of Carly's killer new bedroom (check out the gummy bear chandelier!), a featurette where you meet Sam's mom (played by Jane Lynch), and another featurette called "Archenemies".

iCarly: The Complete 3rd Season is available now. It's full screen format, with a total running time of 311 minutes. Not rated, it's safe for the tween age range of about 7 to 12. The suggested retail price is $19.99, though Amazon has it available for just $14.99 as of this posting. (Netflix folks: this title is not currently available to add to your DVD queue, but you can instantly stream parts of season 1 & 2)

I received a copy of this DVD in order to view it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Hang On To Your... Feet?

What on earth is with all these feet washing ashore?

It's getting creepy. Twelve feet have washed ashore over the last four years, including yet another one. (Weirdly, it starts after we moved to the west coast... lol) Are they too tall for their coffins and they are cutting the feet off so they can fit? Does someone have a foot fetish? Or really HATES feet maybe? lol

I just love how they say foul play isn't suspected. /dripping sarcasm I don't know about you, but bodies don't usually end up in the water unless A)someone put them there or B)they put themselves there (ie: jumping off the bridge) Last I checked, it was a little illegal to dump a dead person wherever you pleased...

What's even weirder? Most are wearing running shoes. Joggers snagged on their early morning run, maybe? Or a running shoe fetish? (I'm fixated on the fetish part, I guess... it's just... WEIRD.)

Since we're talking about severed feet, and Halloween will be here before we know - or you just want to be a hit at your next zombie walk - check out this totally cool Severed Foot Cheeseball over at Yummyland.

Random Thoughts Tuesday - I Feel Productive

Stacy

I spent the morning restocking our groceries. I had a few mini heart attacks seeing how much prices had jumped in the last two weeks, and that was buying bulk. We went to the regular grocery store to get some coupon items, and I just don't know how regular people can shop. Even buying sale items, I don't think I could stretch my budget enough - no wonder so many people are on food stamps. :( For me, I can buy a 50 pound bag of flour for under $15, and there's our breads and pizzas for the month. A decent loaf of bread is at least $4! Insanity!

...it did feel good to smack Walmart with a stack of free coupons, lol.

I am still hearing strip bar music. At this point, I want to do evil things to whomever owns that stereo. I hear it all day, at different times of the night... and I am sick of it.

Did you know General Mills makes Dora cereal? I didn't. I could have lived without knowing it. We hit up Grocery Outlet, the one place I thought was Dora proof. Apparently, I was wrong. The most expensive box of cereal I have bought in years ($2.49) came home with us. Sigh!

...it's not like any of the other characters out there are that much better - I can't stand Barbie for instance - but *I* need more variety even if the kiddo doesn't. lol

It just hit me how tired I am after all that shopping.

...we better not loose the power any time soon, now that the fridge is well stocked.

They are taking over the world: Zombies walk downtown Lincoln Check out the photo of the kids, lol Hey, they even mention ZomBCon - we are getting closer! Bet y'all can't wait until Zombie month around here, can you? ;)

...notice how the zombie walks have become all the rage? Bite that, sparkly vampires. *sticks tongue out* LOL!

Zombies Ruined My Day review I'd totally LOVE to play this game, except Xbox 360 seems to be the only game system we don't have. And unless one lands in my lap, I'm not buying one. Three consoles sitting by the TV at the moment is ENOUGH! Maybe it could end up on the PSN? Yooo hooo, game creators? You see this post? Give me my wish! ;)

Oh oh oh the sun just came out! I better hurry up and get my bread rising!

Review & Giveaway: Designerliners

Raise your hand if you think trash bags are ugly.

I do. And since I have a love/hate relationship with any sort of plastic - from plastic trash cans to yes, trash bags, they are not my most favorite thing to buy.

When I first heard of the decorative biodegradable trash bags called Designerliners, I was planning to use them in the bathroom. Let's face it, smaller trash bags are not only hard to find - you don't have much of a choice. Most of the small bags are scented and pink, blue, or off white. *yawns* Boring! I certainly don't want the awful "scent" and those colors don't really match my bathroom. Most of the time, I simply relegate any previously used plastic bag to the bathroom - and I have to ration those, because plastic bags coming in my home are RARE. I am all about my cloth bags and I get super de duper cranky when a clerk doesn't pay attention and tries to give me a plastic bag. (Grrr!)

Anyways, those plastic bags are UGLY. Who wants company to see the last place you shopped at? (which in my place was probably Goodwill. LOL) Designerliners look way better in your bathroom, and come in fun prints such as black leopard, red gingham, and blue toile. They sent me on over the Black Tattersol pattern to try out. This pattern is one of the bigger sizes, it fits the 7-10 gallon waste buckets. They run about 24" by 24". It ended up engulfing our little bathroom trash can for the picture, so I tried it out on the kitchen one - where it fit perfectly! The pattern as you'll see is on the inside of the bag, so when you fold it over, you can see it over the side of the wastebasket:

It goes awesome with my red, black, and white kitchen!

A 12 pack of Designerliners run $9.95, which is a little steep next to regular trash bags. (Although those of you who purchase biodegradable trash bags know that those aren't cheap, either) Now the cost doesn't bother me so much for us because not a lot ends up in my bathroom trash can - we use cloth "hankies" unless we are sick and pretty much everything else is re-usable, so the only things that end up in there are when someone is sick or we have company. (I don't force them to use cloth, lol) A bag can last nearly a month around here.

You can purchase these via their website, or on eBay, Amazon, and Alice. Designerliners are also made here in the USA! (Hurray!)

Win it! Thanks to Designerliners, one lucky reader is going to win a package of Designerliners! To enter, visit their website and tell us which pattern you like best.

As always, you can receive extra entries for:

That's four (4) possible entries! Giveaway ends September 3rd at 11:59 PM PST, and please leave your email address in your entry or have it available in your profile. US only, sorry :( Good luck everyone!! :)

I received the products mentioned above in order to write this post. All opinions are my own. One winner will receive the prize stated above, as fulfilled by the giveaway sponsor.

The Journey Towards Simpler Times Has Begun

About six months ago, DH and I looked at each other and said this isn't working for us.

No, not our marriage, silly! I'm talking about our lifestyle! We just are not pleased with the way the world is churning around us, and decided to start making changes to make our little corner of the world at least a little better. So we decided to try to pay attention with where things were made (trying to stick to USA made as much as possible), cut down on processed food, cut back on waste, etc.

Our journey started with several factors in mind: one, I wanted to keep our costs down as much as possible. Of course, there is an initial start up cost with some of the items, but with the price range I am using, it pays for itself rather quickly.

Two, we plan to start building our own home by ourselves when we finally get the chance to move, and that means we'll be roughing it probably for at least a year, if not more - and that also means not a lot of space to store things, and the fact that we can't have a lot of trash.

Three, I felt the calling to return to a more simpler time - after all, how many overweight housewives did you see back in he early 1900's? None, right? That's because they were always busy cooking and cleaning! Disposable goods may mean less work these days, but it also means too much of an impact on the environment. Even just using one sponge a week in my kitchen alone means 52 of them in trash by the end of the year. This isn't an example I would like to have for my daughter at all!

I am the first one to admit that what works for one, may not work for another. I've tried more eco friendly steps myself, and found out that myself. However, I want to share some of my steps over the next few months that I've been taking just in case it gives someone else some ideas.

Book Review: Merciless By Diana Palmer

I recently received a copy of Diana Palmer's latest book Merciless to review.

Jocelyn is a single mother raising a young son while working as an administrative assistant for the FBI. Her boss, Jon Blackhawk, is an FBI agent that focuses on finding kidnappers and other tough cases. He's also fielding single women his mother, Cammy, sends his way, much to his dismay. Things are tough for Jocelyn - her schedule sometimes means she's late to pick up her son from daycare, she has some medical problems, and her son, who can be a bit of a handful, might have ADD - she still manages to do a good job in the office. When one of the men Jon helped put away behind bars is suddenly released, trouble begins brewing. Jocelyn stands by his side, even when her place gets broken into and Markie is threatened. Will Jon catch this person, solve the mystery of another set of murders, and maybe find out that Jocelyn is the one for him?

Oh, and there's a big secret you'll find out, too.

Merciless is the follow up to last year's Dangerous. (Click there to read my review, but really, you don't have to read that book to enjoy this one.) Jon is Kilraven's brother, and you'll see characters from the last book, including Winnie, pop up throughout this book. I liked Jocelyn's character, and was amused at the history and video games banter (lots of WoW thrown about here), but like the last book, something is missing from Ms. Palmer's writing. I don't know whether it's being written too fast to develop some of the characters, or whether she's just trying to throw in characters for future books - maybe a ghost writer? I'm not sure, but she has definitely written better books. It was still a nice read to waste some time, but I'm glad I didn't pay for the hardcover book! (paperback edition, maybe)

Merciless by Diana Palmer is a hardcover romance fiction book published by Harlequin. It is 304 pages long. The suggested cover price is $24.95, but Amazon has it available for $15.99 as of this posting. It is also available as an e-book for the Kindle and other e-readers.

I received a copy of this book in order to read it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and not that of the author(s) or publisher.

National Dog Day 2011

Yes, it's yet another lovely holiday. They have National Cat Day (which I think I missed?) so of course they have to have National Dog Day. And I can never resist the chance to show off one of our zoo! So here's your Corgi cuteness for the day:

Captain seems to hate the camera, so it's just the Grumpy Princess today, who wasn't quite so Grumpy when this photo was taken. She was more of the silly princess. ;) She can't resist rolling in a good patch of grass. (It's so embarassing sometimes!)

Thrifty Thursday - Sharpening Scissors

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about a quick tip for keeping your scissors sharp.

Good quality scissors, especially sewing scissors, can easily set you back $50-60, sometimes more. Sure, you can purchase cheaper, but the lifespan is always shorter, which leads to more waste in our landfills. To keep those scissors as sharp as the day you purchased them, simply get a piece of fine sandpaper, and cut a few thin strips off the sides. This will sharpen your scissors for you, and no need to pay someone to sharpen them for you! Just be careful you don't cut yourself using your sharpened scissors, of course.

DVD Review: Back To The Secret Garden

My family and I recently received a copy of the new DVD Back to the Secret Garden to review.

When I was a little girl, The Secret Garden and the subsequent Hallmark movie was one of my favorite stories. I re-read the book over and over, and viewed the movie many times! If you've never read the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, truly - you must!

Back to the Secret Garden takes place in that same magical garden thirty years later, where the manor has become an orphanage for children who have lost their parents in the war. (If you have seen the first movie, you may remember that Dickon lost his life in WWI) Now the Secret Garden is dying - the plants are wilting, the door has been lost again, and there is no more magic to be found. Children are only allowed to be in the garden on Sundays when they are on their best behavior, and they may not run or touch anything while they are in there. Lizzie, a young girl from America, is determined to save the garden, and steals the key. Alas, she is caught, but is able to keep the key - until other children steal the key from her. Will Lizzie be able to bring the magic back to the Secret Garden and save it?

I actually didn't know there had been a "sequel" to the movie produced until a few weeks ago! I was so thrilled to be able to view it with my daughter! It was a little different than the first - of course, it was made nearly twenty years later and set thirty years ahead from it - but it was still nice to view nonetheless. I would have loved more animals, of course, and it reminded me how much the story needed Dickon's character. (Can you tell he was my favorite character? lol) The story definitely is safe for all ages to enjoy.

There are no special features included on this DVD.

Back to the Secret Garden is available now on DVD at your favorite place to purchase DVD's from. Full screen format, the total running time is 100 minutes long. It is rated G, safe for all ages. The suggested retail price is $9.99, and Amazon has it available for $9.39 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is not currently available for instant streaming, but you can add it to your DVD queue to receive it through the mail)

I received a copy of this DVD to view in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Random Thoughts Tuesday - Zombie Engagement

Stacy

DH wanted to treat me for my birthday, so yesterday we headed off to window shop, including the Auburn Super Mall, which we had never been to. Let me start off by saying that I am horrified at much we have let back to school become a commercial business - who says kids need thousands of dollars of new clothing? And overpriced school supplies? Who says the pencils left from last year aren't still good enough for this year? Or the backpacks? It's sickening to me, this waste of resources and money. I was listening to a 12ish boy saying HE HAD TO HAVE THIS! NOT ANYTHING ELSE! and I literally wanted to throw him over my knee and spank him. It's ridiculous!

...seriously, the amount of bad behavior and temper tantrums were just too much for me. It was awful. I couldn't get out of the mall fast enough.

DH also took us to Goodwill by the pound. Eh... although the kiddo got a new dress, DH got a hysterical apron that says Vegetarian = Old Indian Word for Bad Hunter (LOL!!!), and I found a nearly new set of flannel sheets for the bed (including pillow cases!) Oh, and some small flannel receiving blankets for a project I have. Total cost? Just over $6 for everything. Yippee!

It rained last night. Normally I would complain, but for once, we actually needed it. My lawn is a dirty white. I'm actually surprised there haven't been more brush fires along the roads.

Unfortunately, with the rain, the slugs came back. Grrrr! I flung them all into the neighbor's yard. LOL

Blackberries are starting to come in! I can't wait to make fresh homemade jam! Mmmmmm!

It looks like I might have a few more zucchini, but I think that's the last of the garden until the apples are ready. (MMMMM... apple butter!)

I finally gave up on DH and treated the drains myself this morning. (baking soda & vinegar, of course)

I ran out of cat food and bunny carrots yesterday. I get the bad pet parent of the year award. (Don't worry, we went right back out!)

Oh, and I snagged my dress for zombie prom at another Goodwill for just $1.29! I was afraid I was going to have to pay full thrift store retail for one, whew - only took me six months. lol At least at the price I wont feel bad ripping it and getting blood all over it. ;)

Review: Dannon Activia Selects French & Greek Yogurt

I recently had the chance to try new Dannon Activia Selects French Yogurt and Greek Yogurt.

Activia Selects French Yogurt had the fruit bites on the bottom. It was strawberry, which you know me and strawberries - I could eat them all day! Like all other Activia yogurts, it is supposed to help regulate your digestive system. Both DH and I noticed that the fruit had a much less "processed" taste to it - it tasted a little more fresh than some of fruit bits in other yogurts. It was also much more creamy too. We really liked this one!

The Activia Selects Greek Yogurt is the more traditional thick and creamy yogurt like you see in Greece. It too was a strawberry flavor. If you like the Greek style yogurts, I think you'll definitely enjoy this one as well. A 6 ounce container was 190 calories though, so if you are watching calories, beware. This is supposed to help regulate your digestive system too just like the others.

If I had to choose my favorite style of the two, I think the French Yogurt won. (DH agrees!) We both really liked the fruit bites. (I still enjoyed the Greek a lot too!)

If you'd like to give either of these yogurts a try, check out my post from the other day where you can snag a printable coupon for your purchase. You can also print a coupon to save $1.00 off 3 via the Dannon website.

Full disclosure as always: I received samples of these products in order to try them out and share my thoughts on them. All opinions are my own.

Shouldn't I At Least Get To Sleep In?

Who dictates that when you become a mom, birthdays are just another day? So much for sleeping in and having a lazy day, lol. It's barely 9 AM and I've already made breakfast for everyone, vacuumed, done the dishes, started in on a load of laundry... I just want to relax!

I think we need to make it a new law that when it's a woman's birthday, the rest of the world revolves around her wishes. Who's with me? ;)

PS: 34 is just as annoying as 33. lol

CD Review: In The Nick Of Time - Making Silly Faces

My family and I recently received a copy of the new CD from In The Nick Of Time, Making Silly Faces, to review.

"In The Nick of Time" sounds like your usual 4 to 5 member band, but it is actually Nick Deysher. He released his first album (One Man Band) back in 2001. He's built a bit of a cult following over the years, and now Making Silly Faces is his latest release. Nick is also a preschool music specialist who teaches five mornings a week, as well as a program director and teacher at an after school music program for 4 to 7 year olds.

The fun CD is filled with little rocking family friendly jams like "The Sun Is Up" to silly banter like our family's new favorite "Pirates Never Say Please". The CD has such a wide variety of musical styles on it, you can't get bored listening to it - there's even some funky jazz in "High Five Hive". And if punk's more your family's style, there's "Punk Rocks" with kid friendly lyrics. If variety is what you you want for your next road trip, Making Silly Faces should be your first choice. Here's the track listing:

1. The Sun is Up
2. Making Silly Faces
3. Dancing Pants
4. Pirates Never Say Please
5. High Five Hive
6. Abajo Arriba
7. In the Nick of Time
8. I Tried It... I Liked It!
9. Punk Rocks
10. Slumber Party

DVD Review: The Angry Beavers Season 1 And 2

My family and I recently received a copy of the new DVD The Angry Beavers: Season One & Two to review.

"That was nuts!" Yes, the whole series of The Angry Beavers was absolutely nuts! Shout Factory has released from the retro vault another mid 90's Nickelodeon animated show, The Angry Beavers. It follows Norbert Foster and Dagbert Doofus Beaver - yes, bachelor twin beavers. They are their own for the first time, and Dagbert likes to cause mayhem - well, Norbert does too, even if he's the more level headed of the two. Together they get into tons of trouble, with plenty of sarcasm thrown around.

The Angry Beavers: Season One & Two contains the first twenty six episodes (which each contained two stories each) from season one and two across four discs: "Born to be Beavers/ Up All Night", "A Dam Too Far / Long in the Teeth", "Gift Hoarse / Go Beavers", "Box Top Beavers / Salmon Sez", "Beach Beavers A-Go-Go / Deranged Ranger", "Muscular Beaver / Fish 'n' Dips", "Enter the Daggett / Bug-A-Boo", "Mission to the Big Hot Thingy / I Dare You", "Stinky Toe / House Broken", "Fancy Prance / H2Whoa!", "The Bing That Wouldn't Leave / You Promised", "Bummer of Love / Food of the Clods", "Tree's Company / Guess Who's Stumping to Dinner", "Beaver Fever / Same Time Last Week", "Kandid Kreatures / Fakin' It", "Muscular Beaver 2 / Stump Looks For His Roots", "Tree of Hearts / Dag for Night", "Un-barry-ble / Another One Bites the Musk", "The Mighty Knothead / Pond Scum", "Friends, Romans, Beavers! / Big Round Sticky Fish Thingy", "Lumberjack's Delight / Zooing Time", "Utter Nonsense / Endangered Species", "The Day the World Got Really Screwed Up", "Open Wide for Zombies / Dumbwaiters", "Sans-A-Pelt / Gonna Getcha", and "If You In-Sisters / Alley Oops".

Yes, you saw a zombie related episode in there -"Open Wide for Zombies"! "Beaver Fever" is a lay on disco, and I think it's one of the most hysterical episodes on the entire series. "The Day the World Got Really Screwed Up" is actually a full length, nearly 30 minute episode that's another really great one.

Alas, there are no special features included, which makes me terribly sad. The Angry Beavers is a great show, and although younger kids (7 and up) will enjoy it, there is lots of humor for us older folks to enjoy. ;) I was super de super excited to know it would be available - and I'm hoping that Shout Factory will soon release this series - and other retro Nickelodeon shows - onto Blu-Ray, with special features galore. (Please?)

The Angry Beavers: Season One & Two will be released this coming Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011. Full screen format, the show is not rated (see above), and the four discs have a total running time of over 10 hours long. The suggested retail price is $29.93, but Amazon has it available for $19.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is not currently available for DVD queues, but the entire series is currently available for instant streaming)

I received a copy of this DVD set in order to view it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

DVD Review: Beyblade Metal Fusion Volume Four

My family and I recently received a copy of the new DVD Beyblade Metal Fusion Volume Four to review.

If you have boys in the 5-9 range, you probably know all about the Beyblade series. Beyblade is a Japanese animated series that began at the beginning of the decade, and the newest reincarnation of it is Beyblade Metal Fusion. Throughout the show, Ginga, a young boy, travels the country in search of strong Beybladers - kids who use highly powerful spinning tops called "Beyblades" which are enchanted with magical spirits. They must fight evil to become named the #1 Beyblader of all time!

Volume Four contains seven episodes: "The Fearsome Libra", "The Road To The Battle Bladers", "The Beautiful Eagle", "The Sniper, Capricorn", "Tsubasa Flies Into The Dark", "Intruders In The Challenge Match!" and "Dark Gasher's Big Crabby-Crabby Operation" (lol at that title!) There are no special features included on this disc.

Watching the DVD, I was ever so thankful that I have a girl, and not a boy, because I was totally LOST watching this DVD with DH. I'm guessing to really follow along, you need to have started at the beginning with Beyblade Metal Fusion Volume One and possibly even the original Beyblade. Obviously like other Japanese cartoons, there is a big toy tie-in with a bunch of toys that go along with the episodes - right after this DVD arrived, we spotted a lady at Target who bought a bunch for her two young boys who was with her. (I asked and they said they LOVED this show, so I'll take that as a two thumbs up endorsement from the right age range) There is a chunk of cartoon violence that I noticed when watching it, but I suppose it's not any worse than the other shows geared for this age range (boys 5-9).

The DVD also includes a free code to unlock special features and battle online.

Beyblade Metal Fusion Volume Four will be released this coming Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011. Fullscreen format, it is not rated (see above), with a total running time of 154 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $14.97, but Amazon has it available for $11.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is not currently available, but the series is available for instant streaming)

I received a copy of this DVD in order to view and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Recipe: Homemade Pepperoni Bread

So I went in search of a pepperoni bread recipe. I clicked on *30* recipes, all used from a can bread or frozen bread dough. If you think I was mad a weeks ago with my recipe rant, you should have seen me after this one. lol I gave up and made this one up myself using one of the recipes I use for bread. I was hoping for a cheaper version, but this still makes for a lot cheaper than the fancy bread places!

4 to 4 3/4 cup flour
1 1/2 tablespoons yeast (or 1 single use package yeast)
1 cup water
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup butter
1/2 tsp garlic salt
2 large eggs
pepperoni
shredded cheese

Start off by mixing two of the cups of flour with the yeast into an oversized bowl. Next, you'll want to combine the water, sugar, garlic salt, and butter (or margarine if you prefer) into a small saucepan on medium low, and stir until the butter has completely melted and mixed with everything. Then you'll pour this mixture into the flour mixture and add the two eggs, and stir completely. Then start stirring in two more cups of the flour.

Lightly dust your counter with more of the flour, and put out the dough, kneading until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Add some more flour to get to this stage if it's still sticking on your fingers. Once you are there, quickly wash out your bowl (or grab a clean one), and lightly "grease" it with a teaspoon of cooking oil, olive oil, or a non-stick spray. (I use olive oil myself) Add in your dough ball, and cover with a clean towel. You'll want to put it somewhere to rise for an hour - in a sunny window, by a fireplace, or even on top of the fridge works for most. During the summer months, I place my dough outside on the deck to rise - it goes faster because the sun is warm!

Now don't forget it! LOL If it has risen to at least twice it's size, you're ready for the next step. Bring it on in, and punch the dough softly, and let it sit for about ten minutes or so. While you're waiting, get out your baking sheets or pans, and lightly grease them so your bread won't stick.

Where you go next depends on your needs - are you a large family? You may want to make one large loaf. For a family of 2-4, this should make 2 medium sized loaves. I personally split the dough into two large balls at this point. Now, because I wanted to make this more of a "dipping" bread for soups, I choose to make the dough long so I could cut it like a biscotti. You may prefer your bread to be a regular loaf shape or a round shape - really, the choice is yours! The recipe works however you want it to.

After you've split the dough (or not) stretch the dough out so it's been semi flattened. Then you'll layer in pepperoni just along the middle of the bread, followed by cheese (don't go overboard!), and another layer of pepperoni. You want to be sure the cheese is covered by the pepperoni. Then fold over the dough so all of the pepperoni is covered with dough. If you are wanting to make it look like the biscotti, you can "braid" the dough, picking a corner from each side and pulling it across. For a loaf of bread, you'll want to fold the dough over, being sure that it's pinched along the side.

Place the now filled dough onto your baking sheet or in the bread pan, cover, and let rise for at least a half an hour. You might need to let it rise for an hour total, depending on where you've placed it and how warm it is.

Preheat your oven to 375. If you are using baking sheets, I would suggest baking one loaf at a time to even the baking out - this way the heat is focused on the one shelf in your oven. You'll want to bake it for 15 minutes, a little longer if you are baking one giant loaf.

Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire baking rack:

Slice and serve:

We inhaled the first two loaves. LOL It's yummy warm out of the oven, but if you ask me it's even better the following day - well, if you can wait that long! ;) You can add as much pepperoni and cheese if you'd like, I just used a little in the photos above.

Thrifty Thursday - Out Of Dry Milk?

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about an easy to use quick tip for baking bread and other yummy delights.

Have you seen the cost of dry milk recently? You'd think it was gasoline as high as it's gotten! I seem to go through it like crazy with all of the baking I've been doing, too. Here's a frugal tip: instead of using powdered dry milk, use powdered non dairy creamer and substitute it the same as you would the dry milk (1/3 cup of dry creamer to 1 cup of water). It gives the same creamy flavor as the powdered milk at a fraction of the price! (and it lasts just as long in food storage, too)

Sometimes you can snag the larger containers on sale for around $2, so if you have a lot of recipes that use milk, stock up! (I haven't tried using the liquid, but I imagine it's the same as using fresh milk when baking or cooking - now with cereal, you'd definitely taste a difference!)

DVD Review: The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails

My family and I recently received a copy of the new DVD The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails to review.

Ah, it's our favorite time of the year - Halloween goodies are starting to appear! ;) One of America's best known cats, Garfield, is joining in on the celebration! The latest TV incarnation based on this popular comic strip series is done in CGI animation, and features Garfield, Odie, Jon, and all his friends.

The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails contains six Halloween or tricks and treats themed episodes: "Orange and Black", "The Robot", "It's A Cat World", "Time Master", "Virtualodeon", and "Mastermind". In "The Robot", Jon is complaining about he thinks he spends half his life picking up after his pets (I can relate LOL) and purchases a robot to clean the house. (Poor Odie gets vacuumed up by it lol) This one's not really Halloween themed of course, but the robot could kind of be scary the way he keeps chasing after poor Garfield and Odie! In "Orange and Black", Garfield is mistaken by a wild cat - oops!

The DVD also includes some Garfield shorts.

I loved Garfield when I was a kid, so I was excited to see the new series available on DVD so I could share the silliness with my daughter! Even though the CGI animation is different from the old school style cartoons I remember, Garfield's just the same and I was laughing myself the whole way through! Who can't but help love this overweight orange tabby? :)

The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails will be released this Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011. Widescreen format, it is not rated, and safe for all ages. The total running time is 72 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $14.93, but Amazon has it available on pre-order for $11.99 as of this posting.

I received a copy of this DVD in order to view it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Swedish house up for sale, complete with skeleton

It's already started on the Gothic decorating for us! LOL And since it lies on sacred ground, we're safe from demons and vampires! ;) I bet we'd be THE party to go to each Halloween...

All kidding aside, it does look like a lovely house from the outside - and a decent price at $640,000 for a five bedroom home. (OK, WAY WAY out of our personal comfort range, but homes in the Seattle area easily go for that!)

Would you live in a house with a skeleton in the cellar?

Book Review & Blog Tour: Across The Wide River By Stephanie Reed

Today I am participating in a blog tour for the book Across The Wide River by Stephanie Reed.

Across The Wide River is set back in the mid 1800's when slavery was still an issue here in the US. Before the Civil War began, folks in the North would help slaves make their way to freedom via the Underground Railroad. People who lived in the North - and even the South - would open up parts of their homes and barns as a safe spot for slaves to stop on their journey towards states where they could live freely. The slaves could only travel at night, and there were secret signals for them along the way. If you were caught helping a slave, you could go to jail - remember, slaves were nothing more than property back then. If you haven't read anything about the Underground Railroad since you were a kid in school, take advantage of the Internet - there are so many really interesting stories out there, and I think you'll learn things you didn't in school.

Across The Wide River is the story of Lowry Rankin, who now lives in Ripley, Ohio. His father is an abolitionist and a minister, and their home is a stop on the Underground Railroad. When he was younger, they lived in a state (Tennessee) who allowed slavery, and he witnessed his best friend, who was a slave, nearly beaten to death. If that's not a traumatizing moment for anyone, I don't know what is. His family is so consumed with helping slaves escape to their freedom, that he really knows nothing else. It affects everything he does, from schoolwork, to even trying to propose to Amanda, the woman he loves. He struggles so much with his shyness that he ends up running away and trying to become a carpenter.

Alas, slavery is so widespread he cannot escape, and witnesses another incident that changes his mindset once again. He goes back to helping slaves via the Underground Railroad and decides to become an abolitionist minister, following in his father's footsteps. Will Lowry end up back in Ripley, and will he get the courage to ask Amanda to be his wife?

I love historical fiction, and was intrigued after reading that Across The Wide River was actually based on a real family and their house in Ripley that was a stop on the Underground Railroad. (see here) The book itself is actually a young adult book, so I'd consider it more of a sanitized version of the way things really were at the time, but it's an interesting read nonetheless. I think it would make the perfect accompaniment for older homeschoolers learning about the Underground Railroad. (and if you live within driving distance, a field trip could be made to the house!) Adults may find the book a little slow for them, but remember, it's geared for a younger crowd.

If you're interested in learning more about the author and this book, you can visit her website, where you can also read the first two chapters of this book for free.

Across The Wide River by Stephanie Reed is an historical teen fiction book published by Kregel Publications. It is 176 pages long. The suggested cover price is $9.99, and you can purchase it via your favorite bookstore, or online via sites such as Amazon.com.

As a participant in this blog tour, I received a copy of this book in order to read it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and not that of the author(s) or publisher.

Review: FyrFlyz

Summer tends to mean kids are stying up later than usual - and that means toys they can play with in the dark! FyrFlyz are these neat toys that allow kids to do tricks and light shows. There are three different styles: the Blue Angel, the Cyclone, and the Nytfyr. Each one has different colored LED's that will light up. We received the Cyclone, which is green and white.

Think of the FyrFlyz like a cross between a yo-yo and the basic string tricks we used to do as kids like Cat's Cradle mixed in with lightup jewelry that you find at concerts and amusement parks. It uses a string that hooks onto your finger from each hand, and in the middle there is the little pieces that light up. You can pull the string different ways to make the tricks light up - the tighter the string, the more "space" is between the light loops. I tried to get a video of DH doing some loops with it, but it didn't come out as anything but a blur. It is really neat though, and one of those toys that are fun to put aside for camping trips, sleepovers or in the bin of toys to play with when the electric is out.

Since it's an LED light, that lasts awhile, but be aware that FyrFlyz uses two small batteries - like the kind you find in watches or talking books - and that can be expensive to replace when the batteries die. I really don't like toys that border on almost disposable as a parent, and I know finding those batteries can be such a pain that half the time we don't bother. Also, since the string is a little long, if you have younger children, you'll want to keep this far from their reach. I would also supervise any children playing with it, just in case they are being silly and accidentally get it around their (or a friend's) neck.

FyrFlyz are starting to hit the market where toys are sold and of course, Amazon.com. The suggested retail price is around $10.

I received a sample of this toy in order to play with it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Random Thoughts Tuesday - Can I Run Away?

Stacy

As if my week couldn't possibly get any better (/sarcasm), on top of an unexpected bill, DH just messaged me that they have an MSRA outbreak at work. Oh, joy.

Did I mention we have no running water during the weekdays still thanks to them fixing pipes? You know this beautiful painting:

That is me. I am grabbing to every last bit of patience I can find.

Actually, I would have no problem with the lack of water if I was already on our land. In a way, it's a good reminder that I have been taking for granted again constant running water. I keep a 5 gallon container ready to do every day things like washing veggies plus a bucket for flushing - and it really wouldn't be such a big deal if I had everything set up the way I want to (ie: wonder washer, bigger line to dry clothes on, outdoor kitchen, etc)

I know, half of you are thinking I'm nuts. I am perfectly happy doing things the old fashioned way. Plus, there was not any overweight housewives 120 years ago - doing everything by hand and from scratch can be a good thing. ;)

I have been scouring the thrift stores the last two weeks in search of several extra bread pans so I can do extra at once. I have two large rectangle pans plus the semi-mini pans, so that usually covers when I want to do a single batch. If I could get a few extra, then I could do a double batch for when things are super busy - except, I've done 4 thrifting trips, and there isn't even a single one! It's almost funny - I hope that means more folks are baking!

...someone asked me why they should bake when they can get loaves of bread for 88 cents at the store. Oh well, you win some battles, you lose some battles.

Too Much TV May Take Years Off Your Life.... tell us something we don't know. lol I wonder how much $$$ was pumped into that worthless study?

Oh, phooey. No Zombies Allowed at TVA Meeting. Take away all the fun! lol

And I'm not overly thrilled with the way World War Z is starting to shape up. I knew anything with Brad Pitt attached would probably be turned into a disaster. Sigh!

We may have to make a road trip.... Zombie Burger opening events are popping up soon

DVD Review: The Super Hero Squad Show Season 2 Volume 1

My family and I recently received a copy of The Super Hero Squad Show Season 2 Volume 1 on DVD to review.

Season two of The Super Hero Squad Show picks up with Galactus defeated and the very annoying Dr. Doom behind bars. Super Hero City should be safe - but alas, Thanos is now in search of the powerful Infinity Gauntlet! The Super Hero Squad must cope without their friend Silver Surfer (who has gone to the other side!), and take on this evil villain to save the Marvel universe! You'll meet a new character in the Scarlet Witch, who will help fight Thanos and try to get the six Infinity Gems before he does.

Volume One contains the first six episodes of season two: "Another Order Of Evil Part 1 and 2!" (this actually two episodes), "World War Witch!", "Villainy Redix Syndrome", "Support Your Local Sky-Father!", "Whom Continuity Would Destroy!", and "Double Negation At The World's End!".

The Super Hero Squad Show features characters from the Marvel comics family - Wolverine, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc, who all live in Super Hero City. While they have many of the same features of their look in comic books, the characters on this show have definitely been created to appeal more to kids, almost like mini-me versions of themselves. The Cartoon Network series is kind of a good way to introduce your kids to comic books which normally aren't always appropriate for their age range, especially as we are on the horizon of a lot of comic book character movies coming out this Summer. If you are a comic book geek, you'll either find plenty of stupid humor in this series, or kind of cringe at the fact that it's not like your comic books.

As always, this animated show is rated TV-Y7, and while younger viewers can enjoy it, you may want to use your discretion. It has the usual cartoon violence, of course, and some of the humor can be borderline as to whether or not it's appropriate for younger viewers.

There is a short bonus feature included with an interview with Travis Willingham, who is the voice of The Hulk. I keep hoping for tons of bonus content on these discs, but so far, no luck. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that the day this series is released onto Blu-Ray, there will be a ton of extra content added.

The Super Hero Squad Show Season 2 Volume 1 really continues with the slapstick humor and the comedy hijicks. There are more guest voice appearances, including James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Brainiac in Smallville), Stan Lee, and Adam West (the original Batman!)

The Super Hero Squad Show Season 2 Volume 1 is available now wherever DVD's are sold. The full screen disc is rated TV-Y7 and has a total running time of 154 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $14.93, but Amazon has it available on pre-order for just $11.99 as of this posting. (Netflix users: this title is not currently available, but you can always check the site periodically)

Please note that I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

My Cookie Dough Sticks To Everything!

It can be super exasperating when you are in the process of baking several batches of cookies if the dough is sticking to everything! Here's a few tips to help keep the headaches down and your cookies looking as good as they should:

*Refrigerate your dough for 5-10 minutes before rolling it out to make shapes. If you're in the middle of a large batch of cookies, and your dough is starting to stick again, simply use a spatula to lift the dough off the counter, wrap in plastic wrap, and stick it back in the fridge again.

*If the dough still continues to stick, try sprinkling a little bit of flour onto the counter. If the problem is that the dough is sticking to your rolling pin or cookie cutters, you should be dusting those with flour as well.

*Push hard with the cookie cutters for a clean cut. If you are worried about your counter being scratched, purchase a non-slip pastry mat in the baking section of your favorite home goods store. They are inexpensive - and as a bonus, often easier to clean than your counter! Should the cookies now stick to the counter, use a spatula to lift them up in order to keep their shape, rather than being tempted to lift them with your hand.

Blu-Ray Review: Spy Kids 3: Game Over

My family and I recently received a copy of the Blu-Ray release of Spy Kids 3: Game OVer to review.

The Spy Kids trilogy continues in Game Over with Juni, who now works as a private investigator. He is contacted by the OSS (which is the super secret spy headquarters) and told that his sister is missing, having been kidnapped by the Toymaker, an evil villain who created a virtual reality video game called "Game Over". Juni must get into the video game and beat it to save his sister. It's not as easy as it sounds, and it's struggle to make his way through the different levels to beat the game. He finally makes it to level five, where he is met by the Toymaker's giant robot! As an army of robots is released on the city, can Juni, Carmen and the rest of the family stop the madness?

Many of the big names once again came back for this movie (although you don't see them until towards the end), and Sylvester Stallone makes an appearance in the movie as the Toymaster. When it was originally released, the whole movie was done in 3D - thankfully for this Blu-Ray re-release, we get to skip that giant headache. The storyline isn't quite as exciting as the first two movies, but it's still appealing to kids, and it is fun to watch at home on the bigger screen TVs. There are a few scary scenes, but maybe not quite as much as Spy Kids 2. Spy Kids 4 is about to be released in the theaters next week (hence the re-released of the first three onto Blu-Ray), and let's just hope it follows more in the vein of the first two movies and skips over this third one.

This new Blu-Ray re-release of the movie contains two discs - the second disc is a digital copy that you can use to upload to all of your portable devices. Disc one contains a stack of special features once again, with audio commentary by director Robert Rodriguez, the the "Robert Rodriguez Ten Minute Film School", Alexa Vega in concert, "The Making of Spy Kids 3D: Game Over", "The Effects of the Game", Making Tracks with Alexa Vega, multi angle "Surfing and Stunts", "Big Dink, Little Dink", and some trailers.

Spy Kids 3: Game Over is a two disc Blu-Ray set that is available at your favorite DVD store. Widescreen format, it is rated PG, and has a total running time of 84 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $19.99, but Amazon has it available for $9.99 as of this posting.

I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Blu-Ray Review: Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams

My family and I recently received a copy of the Blu-Ray release of Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams to review.

Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams is the live action sequel to the popular Spy Kids movie. It continues following the Cortez family, who work together now as spies - complete with the help of the grandparents! You can definitely say the spy business runs in the family! Carmen and Juni facce competition from Gary and Gerti Giggles and are stuck working together after the President's daughter sabotages a thrill ride. From here, Carmen and Juni - after having to get Juni re-instated as a spy - end up following a trail to an island where a psychotic (hehe) scientist is trying to create miniature versions of all of the animals. Can Carmen and Juni stop Romero and save the world?

This one has flying pigs - really! - called "Sporks". LOL Maybe the story isn't quite as strong as the first Spy Kids movie, but they pulled out even more special effects for this one. Most of the big names returned for this one, including Antonio Banderas and Danny Trejo as Machete. This one might be a little more scary due to an army of skeletons. (although as a geeky parent, this scene was fun!)

This new Blu-Ray re-release of the movie contains two discs - the second disc is a digital copy that you can use to upload to all of your portable devices. Disc one contains a stack of special features, including audio commentary by director Robert Rodriguez, the the "Robert Rodriguez Ten Minute Film School", "A New Kind of Stunt Kid", several lost scenes with optional director's commentary, the "Isle of Dreams" music video, "School At Big Bend National Park", "Essential Gear: The Gadgets of Spy Kids", a behind the scenes montage, "Total Access 24/7: A Day In The Life of Spy Kids", and some trailers.

Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams is a two disc Blu-Ray set that is available at your favorite DVD store. Widescreen format, it is rated PG, and has a total running time of 100 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $19.99, but Amazon has it available for $9.49 as of this posting.

I received a copy of this DVD in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Blu-Ray Review: Spy Kids

My family and I recently received a copy of the Blu-Ray release of Spy Kids to review.

Spy Kids is a live action film that follows the Cortez family. Once upon a time, Gregorio and Ingrid were ultra secret top spies, living the life of danger at every turn. Then one day, they walked away from it all, wanting to become parents. It's been quiet over the years - well, as quiet as being a parent can be ;) - but suddenly, nine years later, they are called into action for a super secret mission. Their two children, Carmen and Juni, have no idea of their past and are staying with Uncle Felix. While on the mission, their parents are captured by an evil man named Fegan Floop, who just happens to be in charge of Juni's favorite TV show. When Floop's minions - or rather Thumb-Thumbs as they are called - come after Carmen and Juni, Uncle Felix tells the kids the truth about their parents. Now, it's up to the kids to become super spies themselves and save their parents!

Did I mention the yummy Antonio Banderas happens to be the dad in this movie? That combined with the presence of Danny Trejo as Machete (which would begin the character and lead to the movie of the same name) made this film a must have for my family! The movie is full of other big names, including Cheech Marin, Teri Hatcher, and even George Clooney makes an appearance. There are plenty of big special effects too so you know this is a movie they put some effort into. While there are scary moments and some minor violence, the movie is geared towards the 7 and up crowd.

This new Blu-Ray release of the movie, ten years after the original release, contains two discs - the second disc is a digital copy that you can use to upload to all of your portable devices.

There is some bonus content on disc one, including several trailers, a cool makeup effects featurette, stunts Spy Kids style, a clip on "Growing Up Spy Kids", the "Robert Rodriguez Ten Minute Film School", and the "Ten Minute Cooking School".

Spy Kids is a two disc Blu-Ray set that is available at your favorite DVD store. Widescreen format, it is rated PG, and has a total running time of 91 minutes long. The suggested retail price is $19.99, but Amazon has it available for $9.49 as of this posting.

Book Review: Top 100 Pasta Dishes By Annabel Karmel

I recently received a copy of the cookbook Top 100 Pasta Dishes: Easy Everyday Recipes That Children Will Love by Annabel Karmel to review.

Pasta is a major pantry staple in my home. Not only is it shelf stable, but it's quick to prepare, easy on the grocery budget, and versatile. I have a variety of different recipes I use on a regular basis in my menu planning, so there's at least one pasta dish served in my home a week. You'd think it would get boring, but it really doesn't! I am always on the hunt for new ways to prepare pasta, especially if it is kid friendly. In truth, I really don't mind being a so-called "short order cook" in my home, because I do try to watch what my daughter eats.

Top 100 Pasta Dishes: Easy Everyday Recipes That Children Will Love contains 100 different kid friendly recipes that parents will also enjoy. Some of the recipes don't even scream pasta (Cheese sauce with butternut squash) and some of the recipes are even suitable for toddlers and younger - each recipe will tell you which age and up they are meant for. The recipes also tend to rely on pantry staples with plenty of fresh veggies. Many of these are brightly colored vegetables mixed together to create fun dishes for kids to eat - even the pickiest of eaters doesn't always realize they are eating their veggies!

Most of the recipes can also be made in 30 minutes or less, making them good choices for busy families who still want to eat healthy together. The recipes themselves are easy to prepare, and you don't need a kitchen cabinet full of extra kitchen utensils to create them.

Even if you don't have children, you may enjoy the recipes in this book - especially if you have a finicky husband. ;) Some of the recipes strike me as appealing more to adults - such as the Spaghetti and Mussels in a Package. Each recipe also tells you if it is suitable for freezing as "homemade" individual meals to take to work (or school) or even for make-ahead meals.

The only thing I wished for is that each recipe had a picture of the finished dish. Only about half of the recipes had a picture.

Top 100 Pasta Dishes: Easy Everyday Recipes That Children Will Love by Annabel Karmel is a hardcover cooking book published by Atria Books. It is 144 pages long. The suggested cover price is $18.00, but Amazon has it available for $ as of this posting. It is also available as an e-book for the Kindle and other e-readers.

I received a copy of this book in order to share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and not that of the author(s) or publisher.

Review: Hershey's Air Delight

Hershey's has a new chocolate on the market - Hershey's Air Delight, one of the first aerated chocolates for the company. It has a light and airy texture that is supposed to make the chocolate melt faster in your mouth. They sent me on over several of the single serve candy bars and a couple of the bags of the Hershey's kisses chocolates.

The first thing I noticed was the Hershey's Air Delight candy bars were bigger - kind of like what they used to be when I was a kid. ;) I'm familiar with aerated chocolate - they have been all the rage in Europe - so I wasn't too surprised to hear that Hershey's had joined in. Aerated chocolate just means that there has been air whipped into the chocolate. when you bite into a piece, you'll notice little empty air bubbles.

In all honesty, they tasted just like the regular Hershey bar we're all familiar with, though it did seem to melt a little finer in my mouth. Ditto on the Hershey's Air Delight Chocolate Kisses - they melted finer, but they were the same size as the other Hershey's Kisses. These would be great if you are on a diet and trying to watch how much chocolate you are consuming, but still trying to fool yourself that you are eating 2-3 Kisses like always. ;)

From a frugal standpoint though, I have to point out that you are paying the same price for the Kisses, but getting half of the chocolate as before. It's kind of a sneaky way to bring about a small size, isn't it?

If you love your Hershey's though, you'll probably enjoy the new Hershey's Air Delight chocolates. You can pick them up at your favorite grocery store or stores like Walmart and Target.

I received samples to try out and share my thoughts on. All opinions are my own.
