
Next time you make ground beef that has extra fat in it, you don't have to waste it. Simply fill a square container with one cup of mixed bird seed, one cup of flour, and one cup of cornmeal, and pour the fat on top. Let it sit on the counter overnight, and you'll have your own suet for much cheaper than in the stores! You can also add fruit, nuts, oatmeal, or even peanut butter to the seed mix before adding in the grease. If you won't be using the suet right away, be sure to freeze it so it doesn't go bad.

Folks might want to do a little more reading about suet, as making bird food from it seems a little more complicated than this recipe suggests. But a fun idea, and an inspiration to feed the birds this winter.
