Audio Book Review: Come Home By Lisa Scottoline

I recently received the audio book version of Come Home by Lisa Scottoline to review.

Jill Farrow is your typical multitasking suburban mom/pediatrician who has finally gotten her - and her daughter's - life back on track after a nasty divorce. She's on the verge of getting remarried, and her daughter is your normal 13 year old - busy with school and activities. It sounds like everything is becoming perfect, right?

Until her nineteen year old handful of an ex-stepdaughter Abby appears and turns everything upside down with the drunken announcement that Jill's ex-husband is dead - and Abby believes he was murdered even though the police don't. Ready to wash her hands of it, Jill reluctantly gives in to Abby's pleading to help find the killer. The deeper Jill digs, the more trouble she seems to be in - from possibly ripping apart the happiness she has created with her new family, to even putting her life in danger. Will she find the killer before it's too late?

I'd never heard the term "ex-stepdaughter" before, to be honest. It brings up an interesting series of thoughts: when you divorce someone who already had children, do you stop loving - or at least caring for - them? Now Abby sounds like a bit of a holy terror with a mouth and a chip on her shoulder, and if I was Jill - would I listen to her? I'm not sure. It's hard to imagine myself walking in Jill's shoes - it's a whole different world from mine.

Talk about a mystery, you've got it with this one. There is plenty of excitement throughout the story, although it does drone on sometimes. I'm not sure if that's because it was on CD, vs being able to read it in a book. If you're familiar with this author's work, I think she strays just a little bit in this one - something's missing. Maybe that's just how this story came out though - each story has it's own attitude. ;)

The great part about books on CD is that you can do other things while listening to the story - from driving in the car to work, to cooking and cleaning in the kitchen. And of course, they are always a good option for those who are sight impaired or struggling to read smaller font in books. (Many local libraries have awesome collections of audio books, so if you're intrigued with the thought of seeing if audio books are for you, stop by and check a couple out!)

Come Home by Lisa Scottoline is an unabridged audio book published by Macmillan Audio. It is 11 CDs total. The suggested retail price is $39.99, but Amazon has it available for $26.39 as of this posting. It is also available as an e-book for the Kindle and other e-readers, as well as in hardcover edition.

I received a copy of the audio book in order to listen to it and share my opinions on it. All opinions are my own, and not that of the author(s) or publisher.
