An average of 1 in 113 children here in the US are estimated to have an autism spectrum condition. When I was a child, that second number would have had at least several zeros in it! Whether it's environmental, chemical, or whatever - that's not what we're here to talk about today. Today, it's about approaching the hard to discusses issues related to the autism spectrum, and offering parents guideposts and takeways to help their children who have been diagnosed to develop social skills.
Both Dr. Brooks and Dr. Goldstein are psychologists who turn theory into practice and think critically on what we do know vs what we do not know, and what we can learn about autism. (Which at this point, I know doesn't seem like much). In Raising Resilient Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders these two authors are discussing strategies to nurture a social resilient mindset into your child, including how to empower your child to problem solve on their own, discipline your child while instilling self-worth, and building an alliance with your child's school, among other things. What they are trying to help you do is make it effective long term, and not just short term, to help you and child develop strength, hope, and optimism.
If you're looking for a bit of support and guidance, try reading Raising Resilient Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and see if the strategies might help you and your child. It can't fix every problem you'll run into - we all know each child is different, and only you as a parent knows what's best - but if it helps create a few building blocks, then it's already been worth your time reading it, right?
Raising Resilient Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Strategies for Maximizing Their Strengths, Coping with Adversity, and Developing a Social Mindset by Robert Brooks, PhD and San Goldstein PhD is a paperback parenting/special needs book published by McGraw Hill. It is 288 pages long. The suggested cover price is $18.00, but Amazon has it available for $12.24 as of this posting. It is also available as an e-book for the Kindle and other e-readers.
I received a copy of this book in order to read it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own, and not that of the author(s) or publisher.
