National Pet Day 2012

Here we are again: National Pet Day! Here's Captain:

Who is feeling a lot better. I guess those medication they gave him for his shoulder really worked, because he's been flying around the house. But it does remind me that my pets (kind of like me) are disasters. Sigh!

Each of the pets who call this casa home - all seven currently - are rescues or strays. I know some of you get tired of me talking about it, but there are a lot of great pets out there in need of a good home. Even if you don't have room to adopt a pet in your home, there are still lots of other ways you can make a difference - such as by volunteering, spreading the word, or donating items to your shelter.

If you'd like to adopt, check out your local shelter first. Some will even have adoption specials, such as certain cats are discounted or free because of their age or color. (Side note: did you know black pets are most often looked over? No wonder my crew is so monochromatic! lol) Right now, our local humane society - Kitsap Humane has free adoption on the first Monday of every month, as well as all black cats just $30.

All shelters and rescues have wish lists, and it's easy to help contribute to them without spending a lot of money - sometimes none at all! Here's some area shelters and rescues wishlists:

*Kitsap Humane Society is always on the hunt for heating pads, crates, and toys - things that may be leftover from another pet you once had but no longer use. (For their complete wishlist, click here)

*Rabbit Haven in Gig Harbor is on the hunt for towels, waterproof crib pads, and heavy food bowls. (Their wishlight is here)

*Pierce County Animal Shelters needs blankets, towels, and crates too. (View their wishlist here

*PAWS of Western Washington is in need of garden hose reels and hoses, as well as headlamps for nighttime walking. (Their complete wishlist is here)

*Animal Talk Rescue needs new, unused carpeting, crates, and toys. (Their complete wish list is here)

*Denise's Delightful Dookers Ferrets Rescue needs paper towels, trash bags, and Dawn dishwashing detergent. (Their wishlist is here)

If you coupon or clearance aisle shop, many shelters can use items like laundry soap, hand sanitizer, AA/AAA batteries, and pet foods. Every little item that is donated means a little more cash going towards the animals and another pet saved!

And if you have a pet you'd like spayed or neutered to help curb pet overpopulation, check with your shelter first. Low income Pierce County residents can get their pet's surgery done for just $10, now through April 19th at the Humane Society! Kitsap County folks, Cat Fix Day April 24, 2012. Feline spay is $45 and feline neuter is $25 for low income folks (making under $51K for a family of 3). Be aware that this one is on a first come, first served basis.

Every one of us can make a difference. Even if it's just spreading the word about a pet who needs a home or turning in an animal abuser, you're helping!

(And if you're involved with a shelter or rescue and would like to have your wishlist highlighted here, let me know!)
