Review: HALO Safe Sleep Crib Set
I worked in a children's resale boutique for a few months during college. When folks would bring in crib sets to sell, I always noticed one thing: bumpers were in perfect condition, because no one ever really used them! So it really was no surprise to me when I heard the American Academy of Pediatrics was saying “no” to crib bumpers for safety reasons. Sure, they make the crib look cute, but you're better off putting the money into several spare sheets for the crib mattress, because you'll be changing them in the middle of the night! (Best tip I ever heard? Place two sets of sheets and mattress protectors on the mattress, so when there's an accident, you just have to quickly take off the top two layers and can get back to sleep a lot quicker!)
HALO Innovations, one of the best brands for babies in my opinion, has introduced the Safe Sleep Crib Set designed to create an attractive and safe sleep environment for babies. You don't have to worry about your baby being caught in a bumper and possibly suffocating. It's the perfect shower gift - it comes with a HALO SleepSack wearable blanket, a SleepSack Swaddle - both in 100% cotton, as well as two coordinating crib sheets in soft cotton jersey and a matching crib skirt. Really, this is all you need - and skipping the extra bedding means you have a lot less to wash if you are dealing with projectile vomit, for instance.
With my daughter, the fitted sheets sure got a work out just like I expected. I picked up a stack of solid color fitted sheets via resale shops and clearance racks. I changed them every other day myself, mostly because I was worried about allergens. We did spend a ton of money on a custom crib bedding set, which in hindsight, I really wish I wouldn't have. The HALO Safe Sleep Crib Set retails for around $89.99-$109.99, and it's a much better value.
I received the green five piece Safe Sleep Crib Set in Serengeti Green, which features jungle animals on it like a giraffe and elephant. The jersey sheets are nice and soft, not like some of the sheets you'll find on the market where you have to wash them ten times before you can use them because the cotton is so rough. I'm a big fan of their SleepSacks because they really do keep little ones warm and cozy, especially in our damp Washington weather. The SleepSack Swaddle is easy to use, especially when you're in that harried sleep deprived state those first few weeks. This one will fit newborns in the 6 to 12 pounds range, while the SleepSack picks up right after that, fitting babies from 10-18 pounds.
If the set I received isn't your thing, it's also available in other five other designs, including a cute caterpillar design and pretty pink floral design.
You can purchase the HALO Safe Sleep Crib Set at Babies 'R US and online via Amazon (where it qualifies for free super saver shipping and free returns!)
