Thrifty Thursday - Refrigerator Shopping

This week for my Thrifty Thursday post, I'm talking about purchasing a new refrigerator.

First of all, when shopping for a new fridge, you need to shop around. Look for sales, and don't be afraid to ask at the store if they are aware of any rebates, etc, you may qualify for. If you're purchasing an Energy Star rated appliance, even your electric company may offer a rebate, so you could end up saving quite a bit.

Ask the store if they will give you free delivery, as well as free removal of your old refrigerator. Unless you really need a second fridge, you're better off disposing of the old one rather than paying to run two at the same time.

The most efficient models are the ones where the freezer is mounted on the top. The side by side models might seem a bit more convenient, but they can use as much as 25% more electricity to run! The savings over the life of your new fridge can be substantial - plus, those side by side fridges usually cost more anyways.

Don't forget to place that new fridge in an area as far away as you can from heat sources like ovens, dishwasher, and windows - they cause your new fridge to run more, costing you more money again!

Thanks for this post. It's great timing. As soon as we get our tax refund, we're going to be looking to buy a new refrigerator.
