Better Weather Means Gardening Projects!
Thanks to my surgery, I am so far behind in getting our garden ready for summer! :( I am slowly going through all the projects that need to be done around here. I started in pruning part of the tree that hangs over the back of our house. It's not a big, heavy tree, but a light one - just enough that it gives us a bit of shade without me being in a panic every time there's bad weather that it will crack and land on our roof. Since it doesn't see a lot of sunlight, it had a lot of dead branches with no leaves. These little branches would fall down and make the ground a mess! (Not that the ground underneath really grew anything - it's right by that sandy area I've shown pictures of in the past) So I started pruning out the dead pieces that I could reach. Hopefully this will open up some more sunlight for the other branches to grow a little and give us a bit more shade.
DH also cleared away some of the vegetation that was growing around the back area of our little shed. This makes me breathe easier because it worried me about becoming a fire hazard. (I simply do not trust some of our neighbors. Case in point: one who can't figure out that you should glance over your yard before using a riding mower, so things don't get clogged and you have to stop to pull whatever it is out. I stopped counting him restarting his mower at 12 times the other night, in less than a half hour! Geesh!)
All of my planters are cleared up and ready to have my container veggies in them. DH bought me some bricks for Mother's Day to go around my smaller raised bed so I can cut down on the slugs and weeds growing next to it:
Looks alright, doesn't it? I know it's not gorgeous, but hey. lol At least when we move, I can take those bricks with us for my new garden. ;)
We also seem to have been invaded by little black spiders - not just a few, but hundreds of them. :( I know spiders can be good, but these are eating my strawberry plants! Any ideas on what to do to get rid of them? I suppose they are coming over from the neighbor's yard - their grass is quite high.
Next project is to make a walkway from the shed to the back deck. It's part of that sandy area, and nothing but weeds seem to grow in it anyways.

Gosh, I'm POOPED just reading about all that you are doing! It's a lot of work getting the yard ready for summer, isn't it?
I don't know what to do about the spiders. I would think you should get a praying mantis, but where? I have a cabillion babies in my yard, but I doubt they'd travel well. :(
Bummer. Maybe they'll all move on....
