Blu-Ray Review: The PRINCESS DIARIES Movie Collection
My family and I recently received a copy of the new Blu-Ray release of The Princess Diaries: 10th Anniversary Edition and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement to review.
This three disc combo package features both the Blu-Ray versions of these movies, as well as the DVD versions. In case you're not familiar with one, or both of the movies, here are the official synopsis of each:
The Princess Diaries: Mia Thermopolis is the average fifteen year old girl - sweet, a little geeky and pretty much invisible to everyone with the exception of her mother, best friend Lilly and Lilly's older brother Michael. Making it through high school without throwing up is a challenge in itself for Mia, so it doesn't come as welcome news when her estranged grandmother shows up out of the blue and calmly informs her that she is in fact the heir to the throne of a European country called Genovia. Suddenly Mia's life is thrown into complete overload. She's being taught about scarves, waves and pears in order to become a perfect princess, she gets a makeover and a tough looking yet sweet bodyguard/limo driver called Joe. Things get out of hand when the media gets ahold of the story and suddenly Mia is thrust into the spotlight in both the newspapers and in school. On top of all that Mia has a choice to make. She must decide by Genovia's Independence Day Ball whether she longs to relinquish her claim on the throne or to become the princess and heir to the throne that her father and grandmother want her to be.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement: This modern-day fairy tale picks up right where The Princess Diaries left off! As future queen of Genovia, Princess Mia has everything a girl could want – except the magical romance she’s always dreamed of. But soon, Mia’s shocked to discover that she needs to get married right now or her family will lose the crown! Comic complications rule the day in this delightful family story about finding out who you really are and discovering what it takes to make your dreams come true!
Both of these movies are very sweet, and appropriate for the princess loving little girls. I had only seen the first one before, so it was nice to finally get to see the sequel. (I never noticed Whitney Houston was a producer on these movies!)
This set has plenty of special features and bonuses. Disc one contains the Blu-Ray versions of both films, as well as outtakes and bloopers from The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and a short set of "Royal Bloopers". I'm used to the Blu-Ray discs being full of the special features, but apparently in this set, the majority of them are on the regular DVD's - a little bit disappointing, if you ask me. Disc two features the DVD version of The Princess Diaries: 10th Anniversary Edition, outtakes and Bloopers, a behind the scenes featurette called "A New Princess", eight deleted scenes that introduced by director Garry Marshall, Audio commentary by Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway called "The Ultimate Tea Party", music videos, and another featurette called "Living' Like A Princess".
Disc three contains "Royal Bloopers" (the same as the Blu-Ray disc), a featurette called "The PD2 Makover", several deleted scenes introduced by director Garry Marshall, the "Breakaway" music video by Kelly Clarkson, an interactive personality quiz that uses your remote called "Find Your Inner Princess", and a Julie(Andrews) and Garry Commentary.
As this is a movie released by Disney, this set contains a magic Code for the Disney Movie Rewards program. The code will also allow you to unlock princess rewards in the program! These discs also feature Fast Play, which if you are unfamiliar with it, is a navigation utility that automatically starts the disc as soon as it's put in the player and pretty much remembers your viewing preferences. So if you have a kiddo that likes to play a certain scene over... and over... this comes in handy since it remembers that. ;)
The Princess Diaries: 10th Anniversary Edition and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement set is available now exclusively at Target. The Princess Diaries: 10th Anniversary Edition is about 115 minutes long (not including special features) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement runs about 113 minutes long (again, not including special features). Both movies are rated G. The suggested retail price for the Blu-Ray/DVD combo is $39.40.
I received a copy of this DVD in order to view it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

Glue is another substance that our local hazardous waste disposal site wants us to drop off there, rather than put in the trash. I had no idea!
