As returning readers may know, I make my own Homemade dog food for our two Pembroke Welsh Corgis. At first I was afraid that maybe it would be too much work, but I got into the swing of things fairly quickly. I found that making a large batch, such as using an entire chicken's worth of meat, and freezing half of the batch made things a lot easier. The best part? No more lugging giant bags of dog kibble home. They eat the same meats as us - chicken, beef, fish - grains that I already use in my recipes like rice, barley, and oatmeal, and fresh or frozen vegetables like green beans, carrots and peas.
Not only it is cheaper, their fur is incredibly soft. (Especially Captain! His fur is so silky!) And the most comforting part of all is I don't have to worry so much about that the food they are eating is going to be recalled, like so many pet food brands have been AGAIN as of late. This latest one really made me angry as a pet owner, because there was several expensive brands included that I trusted. :( I had to throw away a small bag that I kept for emergency purposes because it was included in the recall! Not only did it make me mad that it was wasted money, but my dogs could have gotten sick if they had eaten it! Sorry, big pet companies, but I'd rather cook for my pets myself. At least there is't quite so many human food recalls when you buy organic foods as there are for the pet foods.
If you're thinking about taking the plunge and making your own dog food, you have my support! Here's a link to an Easy cooked dog food recipe you can try making. A easy way to make your own is to toss in your meat of choice into your slow cooker, and cook for several hours. I love to use whole chickens myself, and I'll just toss one early in the AM and let it cook all day. Then clean the meat off the bones and toss it back in the broth, and add in 2-3 cups of cooked rice, and one cup of cooked veggies of your choice. (My two adore peas!) This usually gets me about a week's worth of food for my two, and it's super easy!
