Laura Reed is the English teacher at Serenity High School. Laura starts to wonder what is going on when one of her best students, Misty, is skipping her class - only to find out the student is being bullied. This brings back painful memories for both Laura and pediatrician J.C. Fullerton, who Misty went to trying to get an excuse for staying out of school - even begging him to say she was contagious. (Good try, kiddo. lol) Together Laura and J.C., along with the support of the Sweet Magnolias crew, try to bring the town together to stop bullying in Serenity, South Carolina. Alongside this great cause though, Laura and J.C.'s feelings for each other begin to grow. Can they get over old secrets and past hurts to find their happily ever after?
Catching Fireflies is part of the Sweet Magnolia series the author has written, one of which you've seen my review in the past. While you can just jump into this story without reading anything else, if you've read the other ones, you'll recognize the setting as well as some of the characters mentioned in this book.
While I admit I've been on the fence with all of the hoopla over the bullying issues in recent years, I'm glad to see this author bring forth the issue for a different audience (a la women in their 30's-50's) to read. Some folks might not be aware of how bad it seems to be getting (in part thanks to social media sites, unfortunately), and this could help them get involved in a bullying issue around them. I enjoyed the storyline, and I liked seeing some familiar characters lurking in the side shadows of the story - I'm starting to feel like I know this town! (By the way, I'll totally take that house and that footpath on the front cover! lol)
