Review: Safe Glow Dog Collar

As many of you may know, we take our two Corgis just about everywhere with us that they can go - from hiking in the parks to the drive-in movies to camping. A lot of these activities include time spent in the dark, which can pose a safety risk for both them AND us. Corgis are a lot lower to the ground, so folks don't necessarily see them right away - especially if they are distracted. I've had folks bump into them or nearly trip over them in daylight hours, so you can imagine I get a little more paranoid in the nighttime hours. Last trip to the drive-in movies had both my daughter and my dogs decked out in the glow-in-the-dark necklaces! They are cute, but not really practical - and certainly not very green since they wear out after a few hours.

That's why I was totally thrilled to find out about the Safe Glow dog collar. This snap buckle closure collar is easy to put on and take off of your dog, and is made of wear-resistant nylon. On the outside at first glance, you see a pretty reflective strip of color - pink, blue, red, etc - but hidden inside that strip is a flexible, light-transmitting polymer core that illuminates when the collar is turned on! Unlike the glow-in-the-dark necklaces I tried that only lasts a few hours, this is much more environmentally friendly, using a super-efficient LED bulb that runs for about 100,000 hours!

Depending on your walk needs, the lightweight collar can stay at a steady glow, switch to a slow blink, or run to a rapid blink. On a basic walk alongside the side of the road, the steady glow is perfect, while if you are trying to get people to notice your dog is there at an evening festival, the rapid blink is a great option. And if you're just letting your dog even go out into the dark yard for a late night potty run, having the collar on slow blink can let you know exactly where your pet is, even if your yard is completely fenced in.

We were sent the Safe Glow in pink in size large. The Grumpy Princess stepped right up to the plate to try it out! Here's our little furry girl modeling it in the daylight hours:

And here she is after dusk with it on steady glow. To turn it on, you just click the button on the front of the collar. It's a little hard to tell in my photos, but it really stands out:

And on rapid blink, where she decided it was more fun to roll in who-knows-what (sigh) that to pose for the camera:

We took along this collar on our camping trip, and I had a stack of people come up to us and ask us where we got this collar! It was so easy to even see her out of the corner of my eye and know she was right there, rather than worry that she had wandered off after a squirrel. (Corgis are notorious for slipping out of collars!) The only unfortunate thing about the Safe Glow is that it is NOT fully water resistant, so be sure to take this collar off before letting your dog splash around in water or giving them a bath. If it's just lightly raining, try wrapping the collar in a bit of saran wrap if you're worried. (Yeah, that's the MacGuyver in me - but hey, it rains here 90% of the time!)

The one thing I would love to see is a remote control for the collar so you can turn it on remotely if they wander off and spot them more easily.

The Safe Glow dog collar has a suggested retail price of $29.95, but you can purchase it for $24.95 at the moment. There are also other dog training collars to choose from, and the site features free three day shipping, as well as a 30 day no hassle return if you're not pleased with your purchase.

I received the product mentioned above in exchange for sharing my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.

What a great idea! I think it would be great to have when you just let them out into the yard at night--you can see where they are and what they are up to.

Very cool!
