The books from popular children's "thriller" stories written author R.L. Stine are the basis for this kid's "horror" live action series, and this marks the series DVD debut. (Just in time for the Halloween season!) Each episode runs about a half an hour long weekly. The show is geared towards the ages 10 and up crowd, and does have some obvious scary situations and minor violence, although it's not just gratuitous violence - there's a learning lesson at the end.
Volume one of this anthology features four different stories: "Really You Part One & Two", "The Dead Body", "A Creature Was Stirring", and "Nightmare Inn". "Really You Part One & Two" features a doll that has come alive, and the brother is forced to try to save his sister, while in "Nightmare Inn" a little girl who has recently lost her father is forced to move in at an inn where nothing is as it seems and the staff have hidden secrets.
The DVD also contains a couple of bonus features: A look behind the "screams" at the show, and original promos for the show that originally aired on it's TV home, The Hub.
At moments it's hard for even parents to remember these stories are geared towards kids - they are realistically dark and morbid. (A little like the original Grimm's fairy tales!) You'll have to decide whether your child is ready to handle "horror" or not - if you're on the fence, I suggest either viewing the series first yourself, or letting your child(ren) read some of the author's books first.
R.L. Stine's The Haunting Hour The Series Volume One will be available on DVD this coming Tuesday, September 4th, 2012. Widescreen format, the total running time is 140 minutes long. It's rated TV-PG. The suggested retail price is $14.97, but Amazon has it available for $12.99 on pre-order as of this posting.
I received a copy of this DVD in order to view it and share my thoughts on it. All opinions are my own.
