If the air is safe around you, the first day you see some sun and it's not below freezing, get those windows open to freshen the air up. It's better for your body than any chemically based air freshener. Get all your bedding out, and freshly laundered in hot water to kill any dust mites. If your mattress and pillows aren't covered in protective coverings to keep dust mites out, consider purchasing some like the ones Protect-A-Bed sells.
You'll also want to dust anything in the room, and clear out unnecessary clutter. Make sure you are using healthy cleaners when you are wiping windows and other items. Be sure to vacuum well - move the bed if you can to get every inch underneath. Don't let the dust bunnies win! Did you know Mattress Discounters offers shoppers the largest selection of memory foam products under one roof at the lowest price? If your mattress has seen better days though, it could be time to start looking for a new one, and you can find those at Mattress Discounters too, of course. ;)
If you've been following along with my blog over the last few months (or years!), you probably remember our whole mold and dampness issue thanks to some leaks. We've been using a new-to-us mattress, and both DH and I have been complaining that it's uncomfortable to sleep on. We had visited Mattress Discounters over in Gig Harbor about a month ago, because we had gotten to the point where I was about to scream if I didn't get a good night's sleep. They had some good deals, but all of the mattresses that felt right to us was a little out of the price range I was planning to spend. (For those that don't know, we've been contemplating moving back home to TX possibly this summer, and I don't want to bring a mattress set with us because of the continuing possible mold contamination. I loathe the thought of spending a ton of money to sleep on a bed for about six months!)
Mattress Discounters swooped in to save the day though. I hadn't thought about a memory foam topper helping the bed feel a bit more comfortable. They were kind enough to send us a Protect-A-Bed fitted mattress cover to help keep allergens out, and a memory foam mattress topper to put on top of the mattress
The Protect-A-Bed Luxury Mattress Protector is made out of Eucalyptus fiber. It's 100% natural and softer than cotton, if you ask me. When I heard that it was waterproof, I expected something stiff and plastic-y. Not so with this one! It was incredibly soft and you can tell it helps with skin irritation. (I have to be careful with certain fabrics or I end up with the itchies! I had to donate a brand new duvet cover this winter because it drove my skin crazy!) It absorbs moisture very quickly, and has a "miracle membrane" waterproof air vapor porous to keep you cool and comfortable. Because it is a fitted sheet style, it's super easy to install on the bed!
The Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a 2" plush memory foam topper that's hypoallergenic. It has an organic cotton removable and washable cover on top. If you're struggling to get better sleep with your mattress, and don't want to purchase a new one just yet, a memory foam topper is the way to go. The cushioning and pressure relief can help tossing and turning. Now, it's not going to turn a $500 mattress into a $2,000 mattress ;) but it can certainly help spring some life back into a mattress and help you sleep a bit better. When we first took it out of the box and installed it, it took awhile for the middle to completely flatten out from being compressed as you *might* be able to see in this picture:
but by the time we went to bed, it was gone. While I was washing our comforter, the cats gave their seal of approval:
Solstice did not budge from that corner of the bed for six hours. LOL! It's become his new favorite spot to sleep, much to my husband's dismay because that's his side of the bed! It definitely felt a lot more comfortable to sleep on for us too, compared to the mattress. The only bad thing we noticed was that it slipped a little bit after a few days (our mattress is super slick it seems), but a piece of no slip shelf grip from the dollar store helped stop that problem. Now if only I could get a permanent cure for DH's snoring, my better sleeptime would be complete! ;)
Win it! Thanks to Mattress Discounters, one lucky reader is going to win a Protect-A-Bed mattress cover and a memory foam mattress topper in the size they'd wish! To enter, we're using the Rafflecopter entry form on this one.
