Holiday Gift Idea: Heifer International

With all the deals popping out this time of the year, it's easy to get excited and forget about what we are supposed to be celebrating - being thankful what what we do have.

It's not exactly a secret that I am getting irritated at the jolly fat man trying to take over my turkey time. ;) The commercialism of Christmas and the holiday season has driven me, well, psychotic. Buy this! Give that! Do this! Do that! Seriously? I'm over it. Life is important, not things that get discarded two weeks later. This is why I've always placed importance on donating to Giving Trees and local food banks for the holidays.

If you feel the same way, or you're in need of a hostess gift for Thanksgiving (or beyond), Heifer International is a global development nonprofit that gives gifts that truly make a difference. They even work here in the USA. Can't bring a live chicken to dinner? (Now wouldn't that be something? Let the chaos begin! lol) Well, yes, you can - you can gift a chicken to a family in need elsewhere in the world. One chicken means eggs for a family, and 3 chickens pretty much makes a person rich. (Ask any backyard chicken owner how quickly those eggs can pile up! lol) You can gift a camel, or a cow...

Or how about instead of purchasing the latest electronic doo-dazzle that will be obsolete in six months, instead choose to gift a Family Farm Care Package which will help a family with the training and tools they need to conserve soil and boost production? And you can also help with the most important need of all, clean drinking water. This is something we take for granted here in the USA, but in other countries, the journey to get drinking water is long and tiring, as well as very dangerous.

The holidays are what you make it, folks. Enjoy every moment, because that moment will be gone before you know it. If you'd rather spend it rushing around from place to place in search of a "thing", then by all means, feel free - it's your moment. But for those who've had enough of the craziness? You're not alone.

What a great idea for Christmas gifts. Well worth supporting.

Thank you for visiting me and helping another charity too.

God bless you and yours.
